Taylor Gray scored two goals to lead South Dakota in a 4-2 non-conference women's soccer win over Wayne State played Friday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Complex in Wayne. The visiting Coyotes improved to 3-1-1 with the win while keeping Wayne State winless in the young season at 0-3.
South Dakota opened the scoring early in the match as Carla Neppl found the net on an 18-yard shot deflection off a WSC defender just under two minutes into the contest, giving the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. Taylor Gray scored the first of her two goals in the 36th minute pushing the USD lead to 2-0. WSC scored right before the intermission as Erin Fullmer punched in a shot off a free kick by Sara Schwieger at the 42:43 mark, making the score 2-1 at halftime.
The Wildcats knotted the score at 2-2 in the 53rd minute when Gena Romano blasted a 14-yard shot past USD goalkeeper Ann Opsahl. However, the Coyotes responded with goals in the 63rd minute by Sarah Halbach and Taylor Gray in the 71st minute to make the final score 4-2.
South Dakota had 11 shots in the contest to Wayne State's nine. USD goalkeeper Ann Opsahl earned the win and was credited with four saves while Emily Walker for Wayne State notched three saves in a losing effort for the Wildcats.
Wayne State will be at home again on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. hosting Southwest Minnesota State in a non-conference match.
