Wayne State shot a season-low 34 percent (22 of 64) from the field Friday evening in a 61-56 loss at Northern State in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played in Aberdeen, South Dakota. With the loss, WSC slips to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the NSIC (second place) while Northern State is now 9-12 overall and 5-7 in league play.
Wayne State hit just 8 of 29 shots in the first half (27%) and trailed 28-20 at halftime. The poor shooting continued for the Wildcats in the second half, however, WSC still had a chance to win the game in the final minute until Northern State made three free throws in the final five seconds to seal the 61-56 win.
Northern State built a 14-point lead, 51-37, with 5:01 left, but WSC rallied to within two points before falling to the Wolves. Laquisha Cook hit a jumper with :57 seconds remaining to pull WSC within three points at 57-54. Northern State's Jaclyn Arns made one of two free throws with :42 seconds left giving Northern State a 58-54 advantage. A jumper by Teresa Case with nine seconds left moved WSC within two points at 58-56. The Wildcats fouled Lennea Mueller of Northern State with five seconds to go and she made one of two free throws to give the Wolves a 59-56 lead. WSC took a timeout to set up the potential game-tying three point shot, but Northern State's Noelle Hall stole a pass from Kylee McGill of the Wildcats and Hall sank two free throws with one second remaining to make the final score 61-56.
Wayne State shot season-lows from the field and the three point line in Friday evening's loss, hitting just 22 of 64 shots from the field for 34.4 percent and was only 4 of 22 from the three point line for 18 percent. Laquisha Cook was the lone player in double figures for WSC with 14 points.
Northern State had three players in double figures with Jaclyn Arns pacing the Wolves with 17 points. Ryanne Brockhaus added 11 points with Noelle Hall accounting for 10 points. The Wolves made 19 of 44 shots from the field for 43.2 percent. NSU was 3 of 6 from the three point line.
The Wolves had a 37-35 advantage in rebounding over Wayne State with Hall's nine rebounds leading Northern State while Kylee McGill grabbed nine boards to lead Wayne State.
Northern State had a sizeable advantage at the free throw line thanks to 21 fouls called against the Wildcats to just nine on the Wolves. NSU was 20 of 29 at the free throw line with Wayne State making 8 of 12 free throws.
Wayne State will be on the road again Saturday evening visiting the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota.
