Wayne State College head volleyball coach Scott Kneifl announced today that Christina Houghtelling has been hired as graduate assistant volleyball coach for the Wildcats.
Houghtelling just completed a stellar volleyball career at the University of Nebraska where she was a two-time AVCA All-American and two-time All Big 12 performer, helping the Huskers with four Big 12 titles while reaching the NCAA National Semi-Finals twice during her career. She was the AVCA National Player of the Year in 2005 and was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2007. Houghtelling finished her Husker career with 1,009 career kills to rank 19th on the all-time list. During her senior season last fall, she averaged 3.02 kills, 3.95 digs and 0.30 service aces per game, ranking eighth in the Big 12 in digs and 10th in service aces. Houghtelling also excelled in the classroom, earning ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-America honors in 2005 and 2007.
The Cambridge, Nebraska native received her degree from the University of Nebraska in December in elementary education and is currently playing professional volleyball in Puerto Rico. She will join the Wildcat coaching staff in May.
“I am extremely excited to have Christina join our staff at Wayne State College,” said Coach Kneifl. “Her experience at both Nebraska and playing professionally in Puerto Rico will give us many different ideas to help develop our program even further.”
Wayne State College finished the 2007 season with a 24-12 record, winning the Northern Sun Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. The Wildcats advanced to their third straight NCAA Division II North Central Regional Tournament.
