York College 71 Wayne State 61
York College rallied from a 52-43 deficit with 9:00 to play to defeat Wayne State College 71-61 in non conference men's basketball played Tuesday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The visiting Panthers improve to 6-3 overall while dropping Wayne State to 0-2 on the young season.
The Wildcats held the lead for the entire first half, building a 35-28 halftime lead thanks to 18 points from the bench and a 22-8 advantage on points in the paint. The second half saw scoring runs by both teams but York had the last big scoring run to rally for the win over the Wildcats.
York College opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take a 40-37 lead following a three point play by Corey Standerfer with 15:40 to play in the game. Moments later, WSC responded with a run of their own, going on an 11-0 run over the next 3:28 to take a 52-43 lead with 11:05 to play. The Panthers then scored 11 of the next 13 points to tie the score at 54-54 with 7:13 remaining. A Brad Starken three pointer with 6:44 to play gave Wayne State their final lead of the night at 57-54. The Wildcats then went scoreless for the next 5:20 and saw York College take a 65-59 lead and the Panthers went on to the 71-61 win.
Wayne State shot 25 of 55 from the floor for 45.5 percent, making 4 of 10 three point shots and 7 of 9 free throws. Junior forward Brad Starken was the lone double figure scorer for the Wildcats with 15 points, making 5 of 9 shots from the field and 3 of 6 shots from the three point line. WSC had 22 turnovers in the game and out rebounded the Panthers by a commanding 40-18. Brett Spiker and Jason Jensen each hauled in eight boards to lead the Wildcats in rebounding.
For York College, Corey Standerfer poured in 17 points followed by Darren Best with 13 and Justice Nall 11. The Panthers made 26 of 51 shots from the field for 51 percent, including 11 of 23 from the three point line and 8 of 10 at the charity stripe. York College shot 55.2 percent from the field in the second half (16 of 29) and had just 13 turnovers.
Wayne State will be on the road this weekend playing in the SUNHEAT College Basketball Classic in Grand Island, Nebraska, facing Benedictine College of Kansas Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. and Nebraska-Omaha Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
