Defense carries #9 Wayne State women in 69-42 NSIC win over St. Cloud State

            #9 Wayne State College held St. Cloud State to just 15 first half points and 34 percent shooting as the Wildcats cruised to a 69-42 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball win over St. Cloud State Tuesday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  WSC remains perfect in league play at 8-0 and moves to 11-1 with its 10th straight win while SCSU is now 6-5 and 3-4 in the NSIC.

            WSC led from start to finish in dominating the Huskies.  The 'Cats built a 20-4 lead with 14:05 to play in the first half following a Clare Duwelius three pointer.  WSC never let the Huskies get any closer the rest of the night as the Wildcats built a 35-15 halftime lead.  Wayne State's biggest lead with 28 at 60-32 with 6:35 to play as the 'Cats went on to the 69-42 win.

            Junior forward Ashley Arlen led Wayne State in scoring with 18 points followed by Mara Hjelle with 12 as nine different Wildcats scored in the contest.  The 'Cats shot 46.3 percent from the field, making 25 of 54 shots.  WSC was 6 of 18 from the three point line and 13 of 16 at the charity stripe.

            For St. Cloud State, Amanda Wagner was the lone player in double figures with 11.  The Huskies made 17 of 49 shots for 34.7 percent, sinking 3 of 13 three pointers and 5 of 5 free throws.

            WSC held a commanding 39-24 edge in rebounding over SCSU thanks to a game-high 10 rebounds from Alyssa Fischbach.  The 'Cats had 15 turnovers compared to 19 for St. Cloud State.

            Wayne State will be on the road this weekend, traveling to Minnesota Duluth Saturday and Bemidji State Sunday in Northern Sun Conference games beginning at 2:00 p.m. each day.
