Mustangs rally in second half for 2-1 women's soccer win over Wayne State

            Southwest
Minnesota State scored two second half goals Sunday afternoon to rally for a 2-1 Northern Sun Conference women's soccer win over Wayne State in Marshall, Minnesota.  The host Mustangs are now 5-6 overall and 4-3 in the NSIC while the Wildcats fall to 3-7-2 on the season and remain winless in league play at 0-6-1.

            Wayne State opened the scoring at the 29:20 mark as freshman Alex Mathers scored her first goal of the season off an assist from freshman midfielder Mallory Hoyt, putting the Wildcats in front 1-0 in a first half that saw WSC outshoot SMSU 12-1.  Southwest Minnesota State had only three shots in the second half, but two found the back of the net as the Mustangs rallied for the win.  Whitney Borstad scored an unassisted goal in the 55th minute to even the score at 1-1 and took the lead for good at the 71:32 mark on a goal by Kelly Fitzgerald to give the Mustangs the win.

            Wayne State held a sizeable 18-4 advantage in shots and 13-2 in shots on goal.  SMSU had six corner kicks to four by WSC while the Mustangs had seven fouls to four on WSC.  Liz Izraelsen had five shots to lead WSC offensively while Mallory Hoyt and Kelsey Meyer each recorded three shots. 

            Wayne State will be on the road again next weekend, traveling to Minnesota Duluth Saturday and Bemidji State Sunday in Northern Sun Conference contests starting at 1:00 p.m. each day.
