Kent's four touchdowns lead WSC in 48-21 win at Concordia-St. Paul

           Redshirt freshman quarterback Brian Kent accounted for 292 yards of total offense with four touchdowns to lead Wayne State College in a 48-21 Northern Sun Conference football win Saturday afternoon over Concordia-St. Paul at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The Wildcats move to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in the NSIC South Division with the win while the host Golden Bears fall to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC South.
            The story of the game was the play of Kent. The Wauconda, Illinois native rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries with one score while completing 11 of 17 passes for another 224 yards and three more scores while leading the Wayne State offense to 534 yards of total offense in the game.
            WSC scored on their first three possessions in the first quarter to take a 13-0 lead.   Senior placekicker Max Martin booted a 38 yard field goal with 8:54 to play in the first quarter to put WSC up 3-0.  After forcing a Concordia-St. Paul punt, the 'Cats got another field goal from Martin, a 39-yarder, giving WSC a 6-0 advantage with 1:03 to go in the quarter.  The Wildcats next score resulted from a Concordia-St. Paul turnover as freshman Jon Davis intercepted a pass by Golden Bear quarterback James Peterson at the WSC 35.  On the next play, Kent connected with sophomore Adam Stark on a 65-yard pass play to give WSC a 13-0 lead with 15 seconds left in the first quarter.
            The 'Cats scored twice in the second quarter to take a commanding 27-0 lead at halftime.  The first score came on a Kevin Paulsen nine yard scoring strike from Kent with 5:57 to go in the second quarter, capping a seven play, 59-yard drive.  After forcing a CU punt, WSC drove 46 yards on six plays and scored on a Brian Kent 11 yard run with 1:48 to play before halftime giving WSC a 27-0 lead at intermission.
            Concordia-St. Paul gained some momentum early in the third quarter on a pair of Wayne State miscues.  The Golden Bears forced a WSC turnover on the first drive of the second half after sacking Kent and recovering the ball at the WSC 19.  Concordia-St. Paul then scored on a six yard pass from Peterson to tight end Nate Thienes to make the score 27-7.  On the next series, CSP forced WSC to punt and the Golden Bears blocked the punt by Randy Weich with Jordan Nieuwsma returning the ball seven yard s for a touchdown, trimming the Wildcat lead to 27-14 with 12:54 to play in the third quarter. 
            But WSC answered with a score on the ensuing drive as Kent found sophomore Cole McDaniel on a 50-yard scoring pass to culminate a 75-yard drive, pushing the Wildcat lead to 34-14 with 9:16 to play in the third quarter.  Later in the quarter, WSC turned a Concordia-St. Paul turnover into another score.  Senior linebacker Ben Perry intercepted a CSP pass giving WSC the ball at their own 40 yard line.  Senior running back Nick Pulscher then broke loose on a 44-yard touchdown run, giving WSC a 41-14 lead with 2:21 to play in the third quarter.
            Each team scored in the fourth quarter as Concordia-St. Paul's James Peterson found Cordell Smith on a 14-yard pass with 11:48 to play while WSC added an insurance score with 1:59 remaining as junior running back Charlie Davidson found the end zone on a 48-yard jaunt to make the final score 48-21.
            Wayne State finished the game with 534 yards while Concordia-St. Paul had 359.  The 'Cats had a season-high 310 yards on the ground with another 224 passing.  Junior Charlie Davidson topped a balanced rushing attack for the Wildcats with 149 yards on 15 carries and one score while Pulscher finished 79 yards on 12 carries and one score.  Kent had a stellar day throwing the ball, completing 11 of 17 passes for 224 yards with three scores.  Kevin Paulsen was the top Wildcat receiver with six catches for 79 yards and one score with Cole McDaniel adding four receptions for 80 yards and one score.
            Defensively, WSC forced four turnovers in the contest.  The top Wildcat tackler was sophomore linebacker Nick Monzu with 10 tackles and two pass breakups.  Senior Jeff Pokorny contributed eight tackles including two sacks and two breakups.  Austan Pomajzl added six tackles with one interception and one fumble recovery.
            Wayne State returns home next weekend for the Wildcats' final home game of the 2012 season, hosting unbeaten and #9 Minnesota State in a 1 p.m. contest at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.
