Wayne State improved to 7-5 on the young season with a double header sweep of Bemidji State Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne, Nebraska. The Wildcats won the first game 6-0 and won game two 11-3.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Wayne State exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second inning in the first game to take an early 5-0 lead. Bemidji State walked both Justin Beranek and Jake Ritzdorf to start off the second inning and Brett Keim drove in Beranek for the first run of the ball game. Ritzdorf then scored on a failed pickoff attempt at third base that allowed him to jog home and put the 'Cats up 2-0. Travis Parsons then singled into left field to drive in Keim and Michael Herman ended the scoring with two RBI's on a single to left field that drove in Mike Bisenius and Braulio Acosta to give WSC a 5-0 advantage. The only other run of the contest boosted Wayne to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Michael Herman singled to bring Travis Parsons home.
Austen Wisroth improved to 3-0 on the season as he threw a complete game shutout while striking out four batters, allowed only two hits and walked to players.
Wayne State was led at the plate by Travis Parsons and Michael Herman who each had two hits a piece. Herman was able to drive in three teammates for three RBI's while Parsons had one RBI and one double.
The second contest between WSC and BSU started off with both teams scoring two runs in the first inning. After falling behind 2-0, Wayne State put up two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning as Mike Bisenius belted a two run homerun to knot the game at 2-2. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Wildcats poured on six runs to extend their lead to 8-0. Luke Abkes recorded two RBI in the inning with a single to left field that scored Justin Beranek and Michael Herman. Mike Bisenius, Michael Herman, Jake Ritzdorf and Brett Keim all had one RBI for Wayne State in the sixth inning. The Wildcats would tack on one run in the fourth and two in the fifth while Bemidji State scored one run in the top of the sixth to bring the final score to 11-3.
Tadd Johansen improved to 3-0 on the season as he went 6.0 innings pitched while allowing eight hits and three runs with five strikeouts and one walk.
Mike Bisenius led the 'Cats at the plate with two hits and three RBI's, including a two run home run in the bottom of the first. Pat Burkhart and Travis Parsons also had two hits each for Wayne State while eight players had one hit to give WSC a total of 14 hits in the ballgame.
Wayne State will host Bemidji State in another non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex starting at 12:00 p.m.
