Run in bottom of ninth gives Wayne State (Mich.) 3-2 win over Wildcats

3/6/2012 7:27:00 PM

Wayne State (Mich.) 3 Wayne State (Neb.) 2

The Warriors from Wayne State University in Michigan scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Wayne State Wildcat throwing error on a potential double play ball as the Warriors rallied for a 3-2 win over the Wildcats Tuesday afternoon at the Savannah Baseball Invitational in Savannah, Georgia.  Wayne State University is now 3-0 while Wayne State College falls to 4-2.

The Wildcats built a 2-0 lead through five innings of play with single runs in the third and fourth innings.  A Mike Bisenius single scored Pat Burkhart, who singled earlier, to put Wayne State College up 1-0 in the third.  The Wildcats added another run in the fourth but left the bases loaded.  A bases loaded walk to Brett Keim scored C.J. Nolen, who walked earlier in the inning.

The Warriors plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 2-2 and then scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  Wayne State University used a single, an intentional walk following a stolen base and another walk to load the bases with one out.  WSU first baseman Kyle Zimmerman hit a ground ball to Wildcat shortstop Braulio Acosta, who attempted to begin a double play at second, but the ball was thrown into right field allowing the winning run to score.

Wayne State University had seven hits in the game to five by the Wildcats.  Travis Parsons had the lone extra base hit for the Wildcats, a double.  Burkhart, Bisenius, Ritzdorf and Luke Abkes each singled for WSC.

Sophomore Mike Frericks was the starting pitcher for Wayne State and worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.  Junior reliever Jerad Barth (0-1) was tagged with the loss, charged with two runs on three hits over the final three innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

Wayne State is off on Wednesday and will play a doubleheader against #14 LeMoyne of New York on Thursday at the Savannah Invitational starting at 11:00 am.
