WSC Baseball erupts for 21-8 victory over #4 St. Cloud State to salvage final game of NSIC series

            Wayne State College erupted for a 21-8 win over #4 St. Cloud State to salvage the finale in a four-game Northern Sun Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.  The visiting Huskies won the first game in eight innings by the score of 6-4 and are now 21-6 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC while Wayne State is now 13-9 on the season and 4-4 in league play.

            WSC scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to force extra innings in the first game, only to watch St. Cloud State score twice in the top of the eighth to pick up the 6-4 extra inning win.  After SCSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, WSC scored two runs in the bottom of the third for a 2-1 lead as Mike Bisenius laced a two-run single to right field that scored Pat Burkhart and Brett Keim.  The Huskies regained the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead.
            The Wildcats came back and tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth with two runs as Brett Keim produced a two-run single to center field scoring C.J. Nolen and Jake Ritzdorf, who both singled earlier in the inning.  But SCSU used a double, balk, WSC throwing error and a single to score twice in the top of the eighth inning for the 6-4 win.
            St. Cloud State had 10 hits in the game to six by WSC.  C.J. Nolen finished 2 for 4 with a run scored to lead the Wildcats at the plate.  Keim and Bisenius each had a single and two RBI's while Braulio Acosta and Jake Ritzdorf added hits for the Wildcats.
            Wildcat reliever Taylor MacDonnell (0-2) was tagged with the loss in relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Starter Tom Doran pitched the first six innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
            The second game saw WSC erupt for 21 runs on 15 hits while taking advantage of six St. Cloud State errors to post a 21-8 win and salvage the final game of the weekend series.
            The Wildcats got on the board early as they responded to SCSU's one run in the first inning with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Wayne State would pile on another five runs in the bottom of the second with the big hit of the inning being a C.J. Nolen single up the middle to drive in two Wildcats and expanded the lead to 8-1 after two innings. WSC scored four more runs in the bottom of the third as the key hit of the inning came off the bat of Michael Herman as he drove in two runs with a double to center field. The Wildcats then erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and complete broke the game open with a 19-4 advantage. Travis Parsons singled to right to drive in two runs while Jake Ritzdorf, C.J. Nolen and Justin Beranek all recorded one RBI in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcats would extend their lead to 21-6 in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Bisenius belted a homerun that brought in two runs. The Huskies would score two runs in the top of the sixth and the game would go scoreless from there for the 21-8 final.
            Mike Bisenius had the hot bat in the game for the 'Cats as he went four for five with one homerun, four RBIs and four runs scored. Nolen and Ritzdorf each had three hits, Herman and Parsons recorded two hits each and Braulio Acosta notched one hit. 
            Mike Frericks improved to 5-0 on the season with the win as he went 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and no walks while allowing 10 hits and six runs (four earned). Trevor Reeves pitched 1.1 innings of relief and Taylor Simmonds pitched one inning. 
             Wayne State will be on the road Tuesday afternoon for a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota starting at 1:30 p.m.
