Wisroth shutout, eight-run sixth inning helps WSC baseball sweep UMD

            Austen Wisroth fired a three-hit shutout in the opener while WSC erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning of the second game to highlight a 1-0 and 11-6 sweep Friday afternoon over Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Conference baseball played at Bulldog Park in Duluth, Minnesota.  The Wildcats are now 16-10 overall and 7-5 in the NSIC following the two wins while UMD is now 9-15 and 2-8 in league play.
            The story of the first game was the stellar pitching effort by Wildcat senior starter Austen Wisroth as the Wildcats posted a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs.  Wisroth fired a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk with two of his three hits allowed being infield singles by the Bulldogs.
            The lone run of the game was scored in the third inning.  Jake Ritzdorf reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Mike Bisenius single and scored on C.J. Nolen's single up the middle.  The host Bulldogs got runners to third base in both the sixth and seventh innings against Wisroth, but both times the veteran right hander answered the challenge and kept UMD from scoring both times as WSC recorded the 1-0 win.
            WSC had seven hits in the game compared to three by the Bulldogs.  Senior shortstop Braulio Acosta went 3 for 4 with a double to lead the Wildcats at the plate.  Ritzdorf, Bisenius, Nolen and Brett Keim each added singles in the win.
            In the second game, WSC erupted for an eight-run sixth inning to rally from an early deficit as the Wildcats held off Minnesota Duluth for an 11-6 win in the nightcap.
            Trailing 4-2 entering the sixth inning, WSC had 11 straight batters reach base while scoring eight runs on seven hits as the Wildcats took control of the game.  Travis Parsons led off the inning with a solo homer to centerfield.  The 'Cats then had back to back singles followed by a pair of hit batters, then RBI singles from Braulio Acosta and Jake Ritzdorf followed by an RBI fielder's choice from Mike Bisenius.  CJ Nolen added an RBI single with Mike Servais contributing a two-run double to culminate the big Wildcat inning giving WSC a 10-4 lead.  WSC added another run in the top of the seventh while UMD scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring with WSC completing the sweep in a 11-6 win.
            Seven different players had hits for WSC to highlight a 13-hit attack at the plate.  Parsons finished 3 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBI's to lead the balanced effort.  Justin Beranek was 2 for 3 while Braulio Acosta finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Jake Ritzdorf also had two hits in the win.
            Starter Tadd Johansen worked six innings to record the pitching win, allowing four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks.  Taylor MacDonell worked the final three innings to notch a save, giving up two runs on three hits to preserve the win.
            The Wildcats and Bulldogs play another twinbill Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in Duluth, Minnesota to conclude the four-game Northern Sun Conference baseball series.
