Wayne State College notched a pair of wins over Minnesota, Crookston Wednesday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference baseball played at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne as the Wildcats recorded 10-2 and 15-0 wins over the Golden Eagles. WSC is now 28-16 on the season and 19-9 in the NSIC while UMC falls to 10-36 and 4-28 in league play.
In the opener, the Wildcats scored nine runs in the first three innings and tied a season-high with 15 hits as Wayne State produced a 10-2 win over the Golden Eagles. WSC sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored five runs on seven hits highlighted by a Travis Parson's RBI triple. Other big hits included run-scoring singles from Brett Keim and Luke Abkes. The 'Cats added two more runs in the seventh for a 7-1 lead thanks to an RBI double by Mike Bisenius and an RBI single from Jake Ritzdorf.
After UMC scored in the top of the third to make the score 7-2, WSC came back with two more runs in the bottom of the third as Travis Parsons delivered a two-run double. The 'Cats closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fourth on a Mike Servais solo homer down the left field line to make the final score 10-2.
WSC had 15 hits in the game to six by the Golden Eagles. Beranek finished a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs scored to lead a balanced attack. Parsons doubled and tripled, going 2 for 4 with three RBI's, while Bisenius and Nolen each doubled to highlight 2 for 4 games for both players.
Senior right hander Austen Wisroth was the winning pitcher, improving his season record to 6-1. He allowed two runs on six hits over five innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Freshman reliever Matt Schulz worked the final two innings, retiring all six batters with two strikeouts.
The second game saw Wildcat pitchers Tom Doran and Tyler Hohenstein combine on a four-hit shutout as Wayne State completed the sweep with a 15-0 win in seven innings.
WSC snapped a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third with six runs on five hits and one UMC error. Big hits in the inning included a two-run double by Mike Servais and a two-run single from Brett Keim. The 'Cats took an 11-0 lead in the fourth scoring five more runs with an RBI double by Braulio Acosta and RBI single from Cris Ely key hits in the inning.
The 'Cats scored two more runs in the fifth inning with Keim adding an RBI single and WSC closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning with two more runs, aided by a Mike Frericks RBI single, as the Wildcats closed out the 15-0 win.
WSC had 15 hits in the second game while holding UMC to just four. Jake Ritzdorf and Mike Servais led a balanced offensive effort with three hits apiece followed by Keim and Beranek with two each as Beranek finished the day going 5 for 7 at the plate.
Tom Doran improved to 4-2 on the season with six shutout innings, giving up four hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Junior reliever Tyler Hohenstein worked the seventh inning without allowing a hit while giving up two walks.
Wayne State will close out the regular with NSIC home doubleheaders this weekend vs. Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday and Sunday starting at 12:00 p.m. each day at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
