#10 Wayne State College could not overcome 36 attack errors as Northern State rallied for a 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-13 and 15-10 Northern Sun Conference volleyball win Saturday evening over the Wildcats at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The Wildcats fall to 12-3 overall and 4-3 in the NSIC while Northern State improves to 11-3 and 4-3 in league play.
WSC led early in the first set at 11-6 and 14-9, but the host Wolves rallied and tied the score at 19-19 and then scored five straight points to take control of the first set with a 25-20 win. The Wildcats never trailed while building a big lead in the second set to hold on for a 25-23 win.
The third set saw Northern State build early leads of 13-8 and 14-12, but WSC scored five straight points and took the lead for good and won the third set 25-23.
But Northern State gained momentum back in the fourth set with a 25-13 win thanks to 10 Wildcat attack errors and controlled the fifth set with a 15-10 win to take the match 3-2.
Northern State outhit Wayne State in the contest .202-.054. The Wolves had 60 kills to Wayne State's 46. NSU had 26 attack errors and 11 service errors while WSC had 36 attack errors and five service errors.
Katie Hughes and
Cori Hobbs each recorded double-doubles for Wayne State as Hobbs had 13 kills and 11 digs while Hughes accounted for 10 kills and 21 digs. Sophomore libero
Courtney VanGroningen added 18 digs while sophomore setter
Leisa McClintock was credited with 40 set assists.
Wayne State will face #5 Nebraska-Kearney in a non-conference match Tuesday evening in Kearney beginning at 7 p.m.
