Big first half lifts Purdue men to exhibition win over Wildcats

            Purdue shot 61 percent in the first half, building a 46-15 lead, to help the Boilermarkers top Wayne State College 91-58 in a men's college basketball exhibition game played Monday evening at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana before a crowd of 11,911. 
            The host Boilermakers took an early 11-0 lead on the Wildcats in the first four minutes of the game.  WSC got on the scoreboard thanks to a jumper by senior center Jared Bartling at the 15:12 mark to make the score 11-2. 
            But the Boilermakers used a pressure defense to force 21 Wayne State turnovers in the first half combined with 61.3 percent shooting (19 of 31) to take a commanding 46-15 lead at halftime.  Purdue held a commanding advantage of 32-2 points in the paint in the first half and scored 26 points off Wildcat turnovers.
            The second half saw Wayne State battle with Purdue as the Boilermakers only outscored the Wildcats by two points, 45-43. 
            Wayne State shot 53.1 percent in the second half, 17 of 32, and had just eight turnovers against the Division I Boilermakers in the final 20 minutes.
            Senior forward Ryan Rolfzen led Wayne State in scoring with 11 points, all coming in the second half.  Senior center Jared Bartling and senior guard Adol Aluong each recorded 10 points in the contest for the Wildcats.
            Purdue had four players in double digits led by Errick Peck with 16 points.  Raphael Davis added 13 while Terone Johnson and Bryson Scott contributed 10 points apiece.
            Wayne State finished the game making 21 of 51 shots for 41.2 percent, including 5 for 17 from the 3-point line.  The 'Cats were 11 of 15 at the charity stripe.
            Purdue held a 35-31 edge in rebounding over the Wildcats.  Jay Simpson grabbed seven rebounds to top the Boilermakers on the glass while David Andersen and Aluong paced the Wildcats on the boards with six each.  Freshman guard Damjan Sredanovic had four of Wayne State's 13 assists in the game while Ty Bauschek and Jamie Pearson each had two steals to lead the Wildcats.
            Wayne State will open the 2013-14 regular season on Sunday afternoon visiting Nebraska-Kearney in a 2 p.m. contest.
