Service errors hurt #7 Wildcats in first loss of season at #10 SMSU

            13 service errors proved to be costly for the #7 Wayne State College volleyball Saturday afternoon in a 3-1 Northern Sun Conference volleyball setback at #10 Southwest Minnesota State.  Scores of the match were 25-21, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-18.  It was the first loss of the season for the Wildcats, now 9-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NSIC, while Southwest Minnesota State improves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.
            The host Mustangs captured the first set 25-21, but WSC hit a match-high .371 in the second set with 16 kills and just three attack errors to pick up a 25-23 win and even the match at 1-1.  SMSU used 17 kills in the third set to edge the Wildcats 25-21 while WSC had eight attack errors in the fourth set as the Mustangs posted a 25-18 win while taking the match 3-1.
            SMSU held a slight hitting advantage over Wayne State .265-.238 while recording seven more kills than the Wildcats 61-54.  Wayne State had 11 blocks compared to nine by the Mustangs, but SMSU had six service aces and only six service errors while WSC failed to record a service ace while making 13 service errors in the loss.
            Senior outside hitter Cori Hobbs led Wayne State in hitting with 16 kills followed by Elizabeth Gebhardt with 13 kills.  Sophomore setter Leisa McClintock had 41 set assists and 10 digs while libero Courtney VanGroningen led WSC in digs with 18 followed by Katie Hughes with 12.
            Wayne State will be at home on Tuesday evening hosting Augustana College in a 7 p.m. Northern Sun Conference contest at Rice Auditorium.
