WSC men complete road sweep with 66-57 win at Mary

            Senior guard Adol Aluong scored a game-high 16 points helping Wayne State College complete an NSIC road sweep with a 66-57 win at the University of Mary Saturday evening in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, North Dakota.  The Wildcats are now 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC with the win while Mary falls to 2-11 and 0-8 in league play.
            The host Marauders jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game.  WSC responded by scoring the next eight points and tied the score at 10-10 on a Patrick Kurth jumper with 12:35 to play in the first half.
            Mary's final lead came on a Chris Mason 3-pointer on the next possession.  The 'Cats then scored seven straight points and took a 17-13 lead on a Kurth layup with 9:17 to play in the first half.
            With WSC leading 21-18, the 'Cats closed the final 4:15 of the half with seven straight points to take a 28-18 lead at halftime.
            Wayne State's biggest lead of the game came early in the second half at 34-20 following a Jared Bartling three-point play with 17:41 remaining.  Mary got within six at 36-30 on a Mike Johnson trey, but WSC pushed the lead back to 10 again moments later at 40-30 and maintained a consistent lead of 8-12 points until Mary made a late run at the Wildcats.
            With WSC leading 55-42 at the 5:34 mark, Mary got within six at 59-53 on a Johnson 3-pointer with 49 seconds to play.  But the Wildcats held back the Marauders by sinking 7 of 8 free throws in the final 47 seconds to pick up the 66-57 win.
            Aluong led all scorers with 16 points to pace Wayne State.  Rolfzen added 10 points while freshman guard Damjan Sredanovic had his best game as a Wildcat with career-highs of nine points, eight rebounds and four assists in 26 minutes of playing time.
            Wayne State finished the game making 20 of 51 shots for 39.2 percent, going 5 of 22 behind the 3-point line and 21 for 27 from the charity stripe.
            Mary's top scorer was Devan Douglas with 11 points followed by Marc Musungayi with 10.  The Maraunders were 20 of 52 from the field for 38.5 percent, going 5 of 23 from the 3-point line and 12 for 19 at the foul stripe.
            Wayne State held a 39-29 edge in rebounding over the Marauders thanks to eight rebounds from Sredanovic and seven by Jared Bartling.  Mary's top rebounders were Chris Mason and Musungayi with seven apiece.
            Both teams had 11 turnovers in the game.  Sredanovic had four assists to lead WSC while Ty Bauschek and Kenny Finco had three each.  Ryan Rolfzen had two of Wayne State's four blocked shots in the contest.
            Wayne State will be at home next weekend, hosting Minnesota Crookston Friday evening at 8 p.m. and Bemidji State Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in Northern Sun Conference games at Rice Auditorium.
