Hughes powers #12 Wildcats in four-set win at Minnesota State

            Junior outside hitter Katie Hughes notched her 10th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 11 digs while #12 Wayne State took advantage of 15 service errors from Minnesota State as the Wildcats recorded a 25-20, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-14 Northern Sun Conference volleyball win Friday afternoon over the host Mavericks at the Taylor Center.  WSC improves to 17-3 overall and 10-2 in the NSIC while Minnesota State is now 12-7 and 8-4 in league play.
            The Wildcats won the first set thanks to a 6-1 lead to start the match, forcing an early MSU timeout.  WSC had just three attack errors in the set and hit .242 as the Wildcats pulled away late in the set following a 19-19 tie to win 25-20.
            Hughes produced five kills for WSC in the second set while the Wildcats forced Minnesota State into nine attack errors to take the second set 25-18. 
            Following intermission, Minnesota State came out and forced nine WSC attack errors in the third set to keep the match going with a 25-21 set win.
            In the fourth set, Wayne State overcame an early deficit (9-8) and came on strong to finish off the Mavericks 25-14 for a 3-1 match win.  WSC forced eight Maverick attack errors in the set, holding Minnesota State to a -.077 attack percentage.
            Wayne State hit .153 in the match while holding Minnesota State to a .140 attack percentage.  MSU had seven more kills than WSC (48-41), but MSU had 28 attack errors combined with 15 service errors while WSC had 21 attack errors with six service aces and seven service errors.
            Minnesota State held a 65-61 advantage in digs and a 12-8 edge in blocks over the Wildcats.
            Hughes was the lone Wildcat to reach double digit kills with 16 to go along with 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.  Junior rightside hitter Elizabeth Gebhardt added eight kills and had three of Wayne State's six service aces.  Sophomore Alyssa Frauendorfer had four solo blocks for WSC with Gebhardt added three total blocks (two solo).
            Sophomore Michaela Mestl accounted for 19 digs with junior libero Courtney VanGroningen adding 10 and junior setter Leisa McClintock handed out 31 set assists in the win. 
            Wayne State will conclude their NSIC road trip Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. contest at #3 Concordia-St. Paul.
