Katie Hughes combine for 28 kills while hitting a blistering .519 to lead #8 Wayne State in a 26-16, 25-16, 25-16 sweep over Bemidji State Saturday evening in NSIC Volleyball play in Wayne. The Wildcats are now 24-5 overall and 16-4 in the NSIC while the Beavers fall to 5-23 on the season and 3-17 in league play.
           The first set was a back and forth affair with eight ties to start the match, however with the score tied at 13-13 Wayne State went on a 7-0 run behind the serving of
Michaela Mestl. The Wildcats hit an efficient .500 in the first set to just .321 by Bemidji State to take the first set 25-16.
           The second set started much like the first set with both teams going back and forth with five ties and two lead changes to start the set. With the score tied at 6-6 the 'Cats once again used a rally led by the serving of
Michaela Mestl, as well as
Alyssa Frauendorfer to score 10 of the next 11 points to take the commanding 16-7 lead. Wayne State went on to win the set 25-16 while hitting .395.
           In the final set Wayne State took control early and never looked back. The Wildcats took the lead for good at 2-1 and slowly pulled away from the Beavers to win the third set 25-16 for the three set sweep.
           For the match, Wayne State hit an efficient .413 while holding Bemidji State to just a .267 hitting percentage. The 'Cats had a dominating advantage in kills in the match with 53 kills to just 33 by the Beavers. Wayne State also out dug Bemidji State 38-35. Wayne State also utilized seven service aces and four blocks in the match to help them to the sweep.

Alyssa Frauendorfer led the Wildcat attack with 15 kills in the match with a .538 hitting percentage while
Katie Hughes added 13 more kills while hitting .500. Setter
Leisa McClintock dished out 43 assists in the match while
Michaela Mestl had 14 digs to go along with nine kills and three service aces. Middle blocker
Alex Opperman had three blocks for the 'Cats as well as four kills.
           Wayne State will host a first round game Tuesday evening in the 2014 NSIC/US Bank Volleyball Tournament, playing either Northern State or Minnesota State which has to be determined by a tiebreaker in a 7 p.m. match at Rice Auditorium. Â
