#18 Augustana 93 Wayne State 75 #18 Augustana College used 61 percent (22-36) shooting in the first half to build a 56-34 halftime lead as the Vikings went on to post a 93-75 win over Wayne State in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The visiting Vikings are now 11-1 overall and 5-1 in league play while WSC drops to 3-9 and 0-6 in the NSIC.
The Vikings took a 12-2 lead on WSC in the first 3:15 of the contest. WSC clawed back into the contest and was down six at 23-17 following a
Jamie Pearson jumper with 10:52 before halftime.
Augustana then scored the next seven points for a 30-17 lead. A
Patrick Kurth layup with 7:00 to go before halftime trimmed the Viking lead to 35-24, but Augustana put the game out of reach by scoring the next 13 points to take a commanding 48-24 lead on their way to a 56-34 advantage at halftime.
After Augustana took their biggest lead of the game at 66-38, WSC did not give up and used strong shooting in the second half to keep the game from getting out of hand as the 'Cats got as close as 18 points at 78-60 following a pair of Pearson treys.
Augustana then pushed the lead back to 26 points before finishing the game with the final score of 93-75.
Junior guard
Jamie Pearson led Wayne State with 18 points followed by freshman
Kendall Jacks with a season-high 16. The Wildcats shot 30 of 59 in the game for 50.8 percent, including 14 for 24 (58%) in the second half. WSC was 5 of 18 behind the arc and 10 for 13 at the foul line.
Adam Beyer led five double digit scorers for Augustana with 20 points followed by Casey Schilling with 16 points. Jordan Spencer (15), Alex Richter (13) and Zach Huisken (10) also scored double figures for the 'Cats.
Augustana made 32 of 63 shots for 50.8 percent, going 12 of 29 from the 3-point line and 17 for 25 on the free throw stripe.
The Vikings won the rebounding battle over the Wildcats 37-28 with Schilling hauling in 10 caroms while Wayne State's top rebounder was Jacks with four.
WSC had 18 turnovers with 13 assists with Augustana had 15 turnovers and 21 assists. Senior
Gary Ross had a team-high four assists for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats are off for the Christmas break until Friday, January 2
nd when Wayne State plays at Southwest Minnesota State in an 8 p.m. contest.
