Northern State scored key runs late in both games to sweep Wayne State 6-3 and 6-4 Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference baseball played at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. The two teams split the four-game NSIC series, giving Wayne State records of 11-9 overall and 4-2 in the NSIC while Northern State is now 9-9 and 3-5 in the league.
The first game saw WSC take an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and one more in the second.
Aaron Molinaro had a two-run single in the first to score
Zak Leighton and
Alex Schleppenbach and in the second
CJ Nolen delivered an RBI single to score
Alex Kreft for a 3-0 WSC advantage.
But Northern State plated four runs on five hits in the third to take a 4-3 lead and added two more runs in the seventh for insurance as Wolves starter Colton Boucher held WSC to just three hits over the final five innings as Northern State captured the opener 6-3.
WSC had just six hits in the game, all singles by six different players. Junior
Dylan McGill (2-2) was tagged with the loss, tagged for eight hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Chad Kim worked the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on one hit with three strikeouts and three walks.
The second game saw WSC leave 13 runners on base, including the bases loaded in a ninth inning rally, as Northern State completed the sweep with a 6-4 win.
Northern State opened the score with one run in the first, but WSC tied the score in the second when
Nick McIntee drove home
Michael Herman with a single. Both teams scored in the fifth to make it a 2-2 game as
Zak Leighton walked and scored on a
Jake Perez single.
The Wolves then scored a run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth for a 6-2 lead. WSC mounted a rally in the ninth, loading the bases and scoring two runs before the threat fell short. Leighton was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate on a double by Perez for the first run.
CJ Nolen singled and scored on a groundout to shortstop by Herman to make it 6-4. WSC loaded the bases when McIntee was hit by a pitch, but
Skye O'Neil grounded out to the pitcher to end the game giving the Wolves a 6-4 win.
WSC had 13 hits in the second game but scored just four runs. Leighton was 3 for 3 with two runs scored while O'Neil was 3 for 5 with a double. Perez finished 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI's while
Aaron Molinaro and McIntee each finished with two hits.
Starter
Nick Ragan (0-2) suffered the pitching loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Wayne State will be at home again Wednesday afternoon hosting the University of Mary in a 1:30 p.m. Northern Sun Conference doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
