Game 1 - University of Mary 9 Wayne State 1Game 2 - Wayne State 12 University of Mary 4 A season-high 17 hits in the second game allowed Wayne State College to salvage a split in Northern Sun Conference baseball Wednesday afternoon with the University of Mary at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. The visiting Marauders won the first game 9-1 but WSC came back to take the second game 12-4. The Wildcats are now 12-10 overall and 5-3 in league play while Mary has records of 7-17 overall and 2-6 in the NSIC.
The first game saw the University of Mary score four runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh to take a 9-1 win over the Wildcats.
WSC was limited to just five hits in the contest and scored its only run of the game in the fourth inning when
CJ Nolen walked and scored on
Aaron Molinaro's single to right field.
All five hits for WSC were singles by five different players.
Junior left hander
John Roberts (1-3) suffered the pitching loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
The second game saw the Wildcats rebound with a season high 17 hits while overcoming an early 4-0 deficit as Wayne State recorded a 12-4 win.
WSC was down 4-0 entering the bottom of the second. The 'Cats scored one in the second and three in the third to even the score at 4-4. Wayne State took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with three runs and added five insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 12-4 win.
The fourth inning was highlighted by a
Michael Herman two run single along with an RBI single from
CJ Nolen. WSC put the game out of reach in the seventh inning thanks to a two run double from
Jake Bruner along with an RBI double by
Alex Kreft and run scoring singles from Molinaro and
Mike Servais.
Herman led a balanced attack at the plate going 4-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Servais went 3-4 with two runs scored. Molinaro,
Nick McIntee, Bruner and Kreft each added two hits in the win.
Reliever
Matt Schulz earned the pitching win, improving to 2-0 on the season. He pitched three stellar innings of relief allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.
Wayne State will be at home again this weekend entertaining the University of Sioux Falls in a four-game NSIC series with doubleheaders slated for noon on Saturday and Sunday at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
