Box Score Southwest Minnesota State 61 Wayne State 3 Southwest Minnesota State racked up 618 yards of total offense and spoiled Wayne State's homecoming with a 61-3 victory over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference football played at Cunningham Field in Wayne.
The Mustangs never punted in the contest, scoring touchdowns on their first seven possessions to roll over the Wildcats.
After SMSU scored on the opening drive of the game for a 7-0 lead, Wayne State moved the ball 63 yards on 14 plays on a drive that covered 6:49. But the Wildcats had to settle for a 34 yard
Sam Simon field goal to make the score 7-3.
SMSU took a 14-3 lead when quarterback Blake Gimbel connected with Raphael Lawson-Gayle on a 46-yard scoring strike with 3:26 to go in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, SMSU recovered when the wind knocked down the ball not allowing a Wayne State special teams player to gain possession giving the Mustangs the ball at the WSC 24. Two plays later, Davontay Stevens plunged in from one yard out to put the Mustangs ahead 21-3.
SMSU scores in the second quarter were a 16-yard run by Ashanti Payne, a one-yard score from Gimbel and a 11-yard pass from Gimbel to Cameron Parus. The final Mustang score in the second quarter came on the last play of the half when Dallin Finley picked up a blocked punt and raced 42 yards down the right sideline for a score giving the Mustangs a 47-3 lead at halftime.
Second half scores for SMSU came on a 10-yard pass from backup quarterback Connor Wilkie to Michael Rivera and a Divonte Beale 15-yard run to make the final score 61-3.
Southwest Minnesota State gained 618 yards of total offense (322 rushing/296 passing) while Wayne State recorded 309 yards with 129 rushing and 180 passing.
Senior running back
Ryan Ludlow paced the Wildcats rushing with 70 yards on 20 carries followed by
Layne Sullivan with 32 yards on three attempts.
Redshirt freshman quarterback
Taylor Reedy completed 13 of 32 passes for 180 yards. Redshirt freshman tight end
Keaton Slaughter had three receptions for 46 yards followed by
Marcel Dunson with three catches for 31 yards.
Senior
Jon Davis was credited with a game-high 11 tackles and had one breakup to lead the Wildcat defense.
Marcus Jenkins-Moore added nine tackles with
Nate Kroupa making eight tackles.
The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend, visiting Augustana University in a 1 p.m. NSIC South Division battle in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
