Hughes' season high 17 kills leads #9 Wayne State in sweep over St. Cloud State

            Senior outside hitter Katie Hughes recorded her tenth double-double of the season by recording a season high 17 kills and 19 digs to lead #9 Wayne State College in a 25-18, 25-20, 25-18 NSIC volleyball win Friday evening over St. Cloud State at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  The Wildcats improve to 16-3 on the season and 8-2 in the conference, while St. Cloud State falls to 8-10 and 4-6 in the NSIC. 
            The first set was a fairly back and forth affair with Wayne State hitting only .130 with 13 kills on 54 attacks and St. Cloud State hitting .128 with 12 kills on 47 attacks.  The Wildcats capitalized on four St. Cloud State service errors to win the first set 25-18.
            In the second set Wayne State asserted their dominance, once again holding the Huskies to just a .130 attack percentage with 14 kills and seven attack errors, while hitting .212 with 15 kills and only four attack errors for the set.  Senior Katie Hughes paced the Wildcats with seven kills on 23 swings in the set for a .217 attack percentage.  Wayne State won the second set 25-20.
            The Wildcats completed the sweep in the third set with 15 kills, five coming from both Hughes and junior middle hitter Alyssa Frauendorfer, as Wayne State finished with a 25-18 win.
            Wayne State hit .203 for the match with 43 kills and 13 errors on 148 attacks, while St. Cloud State hit .150 for the match with 37 kill and 16 errors on 140 attacks. 
            St. Cloud State had more digs than Wayne State, 84-77, but Wayne State had eight service aces to just two by the Huskies.  The Huskies also held the advantage in blocks in the match, with five total blocks and none by the Wildcats. 
            Hughes was the lone player in the match to record double-digit kills with 17, followed by Frauendorfer and Elizabeth Gebhardt with eight a piece. 
            Michaela Mestl and Hughes each recorded 19 digs in the match while Mestl added four of Wayne State's eight service aces.  Leisa McClintock handed out 35 assists. 
            Wayne State will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. NSIC match against #5 Minnesota Duluth in Duluth, Minnesota.
