Hernandez goal gives Wildcats 1-0 victory over Concordia-St. Paul

            Junior Valerie Hernandez scored the lone goal of the match off of the assist from Carys Hund to give Wayne State College a 1-0 Northern Sun Conference women's soccer win Sunday afternoon over Concordia-St. Paul at the WSC Soccer Pitch.  With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-9-3 and 2-8-1 in the NSIC, while the loss drops Concordia-St. Paul to 6-8-0 and 5-6-0 in league play. 
            Despite earning three corner kicks in the first half, Wayne State was unable to capitalize on any of the set pieces.  The Wildcats had five shots, three of which were on goal in the first half, while holding Concordia-St. Paul to just two shots in the half, and the two sides entered the half scoreless.
            In the second half, the Golden Bears came out as the aggressor with three shots in the first five minutes of the half.  Once the Wildcats settled down, they went on the counter attack, and in the 63rd minute Valerie Hernandez scored off of the cross from Carys Hund.  Concordia-St. Paul would not go away quietly, earning four corner kicks after the Wildcat goal, but were unable to score on any of the set pieces.
            Hernandez led the Wildcats offensively with her first goal of the season.  She also tied for the team-high in shots with two along with Josie Brown. 
            Junior goalkeeper Kylie Comba was credited with four saves in the contest for her third clean sheet of the season.
            As a team, Concordia-St. Paul outshot Wayne State 11-8, and earned more corner kicks, 5-3.  Wayne State was called for just eight team fouls to ten on Concordia-St. Paul.
            Wayne State will be on the road next weekend, visiting the University of Mary Saturday and #21 Minot State Sunday with both games starting at 1 p.m.
