Wildcats grind out 20-17 win over Concordia-St. Paul to make Dan McLaughlin all-time wins leader at WSC

            For the second straight week, Ryan Ludlow and Layne Sullivan each ran for over 100 yards as Wayne State College defeated Concordia-St. Paul 20-17 in Northern Sun Conference football played Saturday afternoon at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.  WSC is now 4-4 on the season and 1-3 in the NSIC South while CSP is 1-7 and 0-4 in divisional play.
            The win also made WSC head coach Dan McLaughlin the all-time wins leader, giving him a 63-57 record in his 11th season to surpass Del Stoltenberg, who was 62-70-5 in 14 seasons as Wildcat coach from 1969-82.
            Concordia-St. Paul scored on their first series of the game as Jonas Schenderlein booted a 24-yard field goal for a 3-0 Golden Bear lead.
            Wayne State responded on the ensuing drive with a seven play, 74 yard drive as redshirt freshman quarterback Layne Sullivan found the end zone on a five yard run putting the Wildcats ahead 7-3 with 6:42 remaining in the first quarter.
            On the following drive, the Golden Bears took the lead back as redshirt freshman quarterback Trevor Tillett connected with Alquawn Vickers on a four-yard scoring pass to cap a 73-yard drive that gave Concordia-St. Paul a 10-7 lead at the 1:21 mark of the first quarter.
            After a scoreless second quarter, Wayne State regained the lead for good by scoring on their opening series in the second half.
            WSC special teams gave the 'Cats great field position as Nick deBuhr blocked a Golden Bear punt to give WSC the ball at the CSP 37.  Four plays later, senior running back Ryan Ludlow rambled 11 yards for a touchdown to put the Wildcats ahead 13-10 at the 11:04 mark of the third quarter.
            The Wildcat defense set up Wayne State's next score as Nathan Weatherby intercepted a Trevor Tillett pass at the CSP 47 and raced 21 yards to give the Wildcats great field position at the Golden Bear 26.
            Sullivan scored on a 16-yard run with 8:36 to play pushing the Wildcat lead to 20-10.
            Concordia-St. Paul got within three at 20-17 with 2:37 to play when Ben Schramski fired a 28-yard scoring strike to Alquawn Vickers.
            But WSC sealed the win by getting a first down followed by a 37-yard run by Ludlow on the final play of the game giving the Wildcats the 20-17 win.
            Wayne State held a 335-310 advantage in total offense over Concordia-St. Paul.  The 'Cats had 304 yards rushing and 31 passing while the Golden Bears had 38 on the ground and 272 through the air.
            Ludlow accumulated 155 yards on 24 carries with one TD followed by Sullivan with 139 yards on 20 attempts and two TD runs for the Wildcats. 
            Sullivan completed 3 of 11 passes for 20 yards with Taylor Reedy going 1 of 4 for 11 yards.  Nick Roth had one catch for 13 yards with Marcel Dunson adding one grab for 11 yards.
            Tyri Bethea had a team-high six tackles for the Wildcats with Marcus Jenkins-Moore recording two sacks and four tackles.  Nathan Weatherby had one interception for 21 return yards while Nick deBuhr added a blocked punt on special teams.
            Wayne State will be on the road next Saturday visiting Winona State in an NSIC South Division contest beginning at 1 p.m.
