Wayne State ends season with 42-14 loss at #6 Minnesota State

            #6 Minnesota State racked up 518 yards of total offense to defeat Wayne State College 42-14 in Northern Sun Conference football Saturday afternoon in the Wildcats' season finale played at Blakeslee Stadium in Mankato, Minnesota.  The Wildcats end the season with a 4-7 record, going 1-6 in the NSIC South Division, while Minnesota State has a 10-1 mark following the victory.
            The Mavericks scored on their first two possessions of the game to take a 14-0 lead.  Junior quarterback Ricky Lloyd found Taylor Johnston on a 12-yard scoring strike for the first score followed by an 18-yard touchdown pass to Brent Esser on their second series.
            After punting on their first three series, Wayne State had their best drive of the half early in the second quarter as the Wildcats started from their own 41 and marched to the MSU seven yard line.  But Sam Simon missed wide left on a 24 yard field goal attempt to end the drive.
            Minnesota State then drove 80 yards on eight plays on the next series and used a Lloyd to Esser 22-yard scoring pass to take a 21-0 lead with 6:43 to play in the second quarter. 
            The two teams traded turnovers early in the third quarter.  Minnesota State's Brent Corey intercepted Wildcat quarterback Taylor Reedy at the WSC 43. 
            The following play, WSC redshirt freshman Jamaal Conway-Smith picked off MSU signal caller Ricky Lloyd at the WSC 32 and had a 21 yard return to the MSU 47.  But WSC turned the ball over on downs after moving just 15 yards on six plays to the MSU 32.
            Minnesota State posted the lone score of the third quarter two plays later when Lloyd rambled 64 yards for a touchdown at the 8:12 mark of the third quarter to make the score 28-0.
            The Mavericks increased the lead to 35-0 on the first drive of the fourth quarter when Virigil Hammond ran 47 yards for a touchdown with 12:52 remaining.
            Wayne State got on the scoreboard on the next series as the Wildcats drove 75 yards on 11 plays covering 4:16.  Reedy connected with sophomore Marcel Dunson for a 20 yard pass on 4th and 5 at the MSU 23, then connected again on the following play for a three-yard TD strike to make the score 35-7 with 8:30 to play in the game.
            Hammond closed out the MSU scoring on a 14-yard run with 6:20 left, giving the Mavericks a 42-7 lead.
            Wayne State then drove 75 yards on 10 plays in 4:22 to cap scoring in the game as redshirt freshman fullback Houston Huss scored on a 1-yard plunge making the final score 42-14.
            Minnesota State outgained Wayne State in the contest 518-265.  The Wildcats had 134 yards rushing and 131 passing while MSU gained 257 on the ground and another 261 passing.
            Sophomore Lane Yates was Wayne State's top rusher with 61 yards on 18 carries followed by Alex Kline with 43 yards on five rushes.  Senior Ryan Ludlow was held to 21 yards on 11 carries and finished the season with 1,039 yards.
            Redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Reedy completed 12 of 34 passes for 131 yards with one touchdown and one interception.  Sophomore Marcel Dunson was the top receiver with four grabs for 44 yards and one TD while Nick Roth added three receptions for 32 yards.
            Senior Jon Davis led the Wayne State defense with a game-high 14 tackles and one interception.  Linebacker Christian Campos was credited with 10 tackles.  Jamaal Conway-Smith had one interception, three tackles and one pass breakup for the Wildcats.
