Taylor Reedy completed 25 of 34 passes for 307 yards and four TD's, including the game-winner with 2:14 to play, lifting Wayne State College in a 34-27 Northern Sun Conference football win Saturday evening over Northern State at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne. The Wildcats move to 2-1 on the season while the Wolves fall to 0-3.
Northern State scored on their first three possessions of the game, taking a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Running back Nicholas Truen scored on a seven yard run and Adrian Krupka booted a 26 yard field goal for the first two Wolve scores.
Wayne State cut the lead to 10-7 early in the second quarter when senior running back
Ryan Ludlow found paydirt on a nine-yard scamper. The Wolves used another Krupka field goal, a 20-yarder, with 10:00 to play in the first half to take a 13-7 lead.
The Wildcats then scored twice late in the first half to take their first lead of the game. Reedy lofted a 10-yard scoring pass to former Norfolk High School teammate
Jacob Hjorth in the right corner of the end zone for Wayne State's first lead of the night at 14-13 with 2:26 to go before halftime.
WSC added another score with just 42 seconds before halftime as Reedy found a streaking
Marcel Dunson on a 47-yard scoring play giving the 'Cats a 20-13 lead at intermission.
The game then turned into a defensive battle until the midway point of the fourth quarter. Neither team scored in the third quarter as WSC gained just four yards on nine plays while NSU had 50 yards on 23 plays in the quarter.
But midway through the fourth quarter, the game turned into an offensive shootout as each team scored twice until the Wildcats stopped the Wolves on the final series of the game to preserve the 34-27 win.
Northern State knotted the score at 20 when quarterback Kyle Lavand fired a two-yard pass to Taylor Houchin with 8:32 remaining.
WSC responded on the next drive as Reedy tossed a screen pass to Ludlow, who made a great cutback move and raced 44 yards for the score putting the 'Cats back in front 27-20 with 6:05 to play.
The Wolves came back on the ensuing drive, marching 79 yards on eight plays as Lavand found tight end Cody Kraft down the middle for a 56-yard scoring play to even the score at 27 with 2:45 to play.
Wayne State scored the game-winner just 31 seconds later as Reedy hooked up with Dunson on the left sideline for a 54 yard scoring play to cap a two-play, 66 yard drive putting the 'Cats ahead 34-27.
NSU had one last chance to tie the game, starting a drive from their own 32 and marching to the WSC 11. But the Wildcats forced a pair of incomplete passes, then got a sack by
Randy Bryan to force a 4
th and 15 from the WSC 16 where Northern State could not convert a pass to Kraft as the Wildcats held on for the win.
Northern State outgained WSC in the contest 426-365 and held a 28-14 edge in first downs on the Wildcats. The Wolves had 61 yards rushing and 362 passing while WSC gained 58 on the ground and 307 through the air.
For Wayne State, Reedy, a redshirt freshman from Norfolk making his first collegiate start, completed 25 of 34 passes for 307 yards and four TD's. His favorite target was sophomore
Marcel Dunson, who hauled in career highs with 11 catches for 145 yards and two scores. Redshirt freshman
Jacob Hjorth contributed four catches for 33 yards and one score.
Senior
Ryan Ludlow was the top rusher for WSC with 54 yards on 17 carries and one score.
Defensively, senior linebacker
Nate Kroupa had a game-high 12 tackles with
DeWayne Scott and
Jon Davis each adding 10 tackles. Kroupa and Scott each had one sack while
Steven Price had eight tackles and one interception.
The Wildcats will be on the road next Saturday, visiting the University of Mary in a 1 p.m. contest at Bismarck, North Dakota.
