Wildcats open NSIC South play with convincing 45-10 win at Concordia-St. Paul

            Wayne State scored 24 points off Concordia-St. Paul turnovers that included a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior Glenn Harris as the Wildcats rolled to a 45-10 win at Concordia-St. Paul Saturday afternoon in the NSIC South Division opener for both teams played at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The Wildcats have won two straight and are 2-3 and 1-0 in the NSIC South while Concordia-St. Paul drops to 2-3 and 0-1 in the NSIC South.
            The 'Cats took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards on 11 plays to score on a 22-yard pass from Zach Osborn to Shymere Williams to put WSC in front 7-0. 
            Concordia-St. Paul got on the board later in the first quarter on a 35 yard field goal from Jonas Schenderlein to trim the Wildcat lead to 7-3 after one quarter.
            WSC recovered a CSP fumble early in the second quarter to get the ball at the Golden Bear 24 and Osborn connected with junior tight end Justin Saunders on a four-yard strike to give WSC a 14-3 lead at the 9:49 mark of the second quarter.
            The 'Cats added another score just before halftime courtesy of another CSP turnover.  Jamaal Conway-Smith recovered a Golden Bear fumble at the WSC 48 with 19 seconds left before halftime.  The 'Cats used pass completions of 13 yards to Zach Glidden and 17 yards to Saunders to get into field goal range where freshman Ethan Knudson booted a 39-yard field goal with three seconds left before halftime giving WSC a 17-3 lead at intermission.
            Wayne State put the game out of reach in the second half by scoring touchdowns on four straight possessions.
            The first score was a 30-yard interception return by junior Glenn Harris, putting the Wildcats in front 24-3 with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter.
            After forcing a CSP punt, WSC needed just three plays to move 82 yards with Osborn hooking up with Shymere Williams on a 78-yard pass play for a score, giving WSC a 31-3 lead at the 2:24 mark of the third quarter.
            A fumble recovery by Wayne State's Randy Bryan gave the 'Cats the ball at the CSP 33 and the Wildcats converted another Golden Bear turnover into points as Osborn fired a six-yard pass to Layne Sullivan to give WSC a 38-3 lead with 11:05 left in the game.
            WSC scored for the final time with 8:07 remaining when backup quarterback Taylor Reedy found Glidden on a four-yard scoring play to increase the Wildcat lead to 45-3.
            Concordia-St. Paul closed out the scoring with 2:40 to play in the game as Ron Johnson scored on a seven-yard run to make the final score 45-10.
            Wayne State held a 383-289 advantage in total offense over Concordia-St. Paul.  The 'Cats rushed for 115 yards and had 268 through the air while the Golden Bears had 159 rushing and 130 passing.
            Junior running back Rashad Trimble led the Wildcat rushing attack with 94 yards on 27 carries.
            Junior quarterback Zach Osborn completed 18 of 28 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions.  His top target was sophomore Shymere Williams with six catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns, all career-highs.  Nate Rogers followed with five receptions for 39 yards.
            Tyler Thomsen and Christian Campos each had eight tackles to lead the Wildcat defense.  Glenn Harris had a 30-yard interception return for a score while Jamaal Conway Smith had two interceptions and one fumble recovery.  Randy Bryan and Jarrod Bazata also recorded fumble recoveries for the Wildcat defense.
            Wayne State will be at home next Saturday hosting #25 Augustana in the Homecoming/Hall of Fame Game at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
