Box Score Wayne State 3 Northern State 2 (2 OT)
Wayne State rallied from a 2-0 first half deficit and scored early in the second overtime for a thrilling 3-2 double overtime win over Northern State Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer action played at the WSC Soccer Pitch. It was Wayne State's first win over the Wolves in women's soccer since 2005, improving the Wildcats to 5-2-2 and 2-2-2 in the NSIC while Northern State drops to 4-4 and 2-4 in league play.
Northern State used goals from Anna Bondy at the 7:04 mark and Darian Leschewski in the 35
th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Wayne State started its' comeback at the 35:30 mark with a goal from
Alexis Strothers, her first of the season, to make the score 2-1 at intermission.
The Wildcats evened the score early in the second half when sophomore
Carys Hund scored an unassisted goal 1:02 into the second half to make the score 2-2.
The game remained tied until early in the second overtime when sophomore
Brooke Buzzell found the back of the net on a header with an assist from
Jennifer Zick just 58 seconds into the second overtime to cap the Wildcat comeback.
Wayne State finished with a 26-15 advantage in shots over the Wolves, including 14-7 in shots on goal.
Hund scored her team-high fourth goal of the year with four shots (three on goal) to lead a balanced Wildcat attack. Strothers and Buzzell also scored goals for WSC while
Samantha Phillips had four shots (two on goal).
Karlee Hall and
Valerie Hernandez each added three shots for the Wildcats.
Senior goalkeeper
Kylie Comba was credited with five saves while allowing two goals in the contest.
The Wildcats will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting MSU Moorhead in a 1 p.m. NSIC contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
