Minnesota Duluth recorded the lone goal of the match 11 minutes into the second half to give the host Bulldogs a 1-0 win over Wayne State in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played Friday night in Duluth, Minnesota. The two teams were tied for seventh in the NSIC entering the match as UMD improved to 7-5-3 overall and 5-4-3 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 7-5-3 and 4-5-3 in league games.
The first half was scoreless despite UMD holding a 7-2 advantage in shots over WSC. The Bulldogs then scored the lone goal of the contest at the 56:44 as Lizzy Fontes scored to give UMD the 1-0 win.
UMD ended the game with a 15-6 advantage in shots over WSC including 9-3 in shots on goal. Both teams were called for six fouls while UMD held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Valerie Hernandez had three of Wayne State's six shots with two on goals to lead the Wildcat attack. Senior
Kelsey Engstrom added one shot on goal while
Lauren Fleming and
Samantha Phillips were each credited with shots. Senior goalkeeper
Kylie Comba made eight saves while allowing just one goal in the setback.
The Wildcats will visit St. Cloud State Sunday in a 1 p.m. NSIC contest.
