Wayne State produced three first-half goals as the Wildcats recorded an important 3-1 Northern Sun Conference women's soccer victory Sunday afternoon at St. Cloud State. The win moves WSC into an eighth place tie with Northern State at 18 points for the eighth and final spot in the NSIC Tournament with one week of regular season remaining. The Wildcats are now 8-5-3 and 5-5-3 with the win while the host Huskies drop to 6-6-4 and 5-4-4.
The Wildcats opened the scoring quickly, credited with an own goal at the 1:45 mark, to take and early 1-0 advantage.
WSC took a 2-0 lead at the 11:56 mark when senior
Kelsey Engstrom recorded her first goal of the season and the 'Cats added another goal in the 39
th minute when
Natalie Rech found the back of the net for an unassisted goal, her fourth of the year, that put WSC in front 3-0 after one half.
St. Cloud State avoided the shutout with just under 17 minutes to play when Kelli Santo Paulo scored a goal to make the final score 3-1.
The host Huskies finished with a 16-10 edge in shots over WSC while both teams had seven shots on goal. SCSU had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks and 6-5 in fouls on the Wildcats.
Rech and Engstrom led WSC with one goal each while
Hannah Knight had a team-high three shots on goal.
Suenly Galvez also had a shot on goal for the Wildcats.
Senior goalkeeper
Kylie Comba earned the win by notching six saves and allowing just one goal.
Wayne State will play their final home game of the season on Friday hosting Sioux Falls in a 3 p.m. contest followed by the regular season finale on Sunday at Southwest Minnesota State starting at 1 p.m.
