Wayne State College ended the 2016 football season Saturday afternoon with a 30-7 setback at #4 Sioux Falls in Northern Sun Conference football played at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. USF ends the regular season at 11-0 and 7-0 in the NSIC South while WSC finishes 3-8 and 2-5 in league play.
The Cougars took the opening drive of the contest and scored a touchdown, driving 75 yards on six plays, as quarterback Luke Papilion found Brady Rose on a four-yard scoring pass to put USF ahead 7-0.
USF was driving again on their second possession until sophomore
Jamaal Conway-Smith intercepted Papilion at the WSC 23 to stop the drive.
Sioux Falls added a pair of second quarter field goals to close out first half scoring as Brett Garner booted a 35-yard field goal with 12:00 to play first half for a 10-0 Cougar lead and later added a 34-yarder with 1:33 to play second quarter making the halftime score 13-0.
Wayne State's best drive of the first half was their first of the game as the 'Cats drove the ball from their own 31 to the USF 31 before the drive stalled on downs. The 'Cats had another drive midway through the second quarter enter USF territory until WSC had to punt from the Cougar 43-yard line.
Sioux Falls increased the lead to 20-0 on their opening series of the second half, using a Max Mickey one-yard run to cap an eight-play, 72-yard drive.
The Cougars pushed the lead to 23-0 late in the third quarter on a Garner 43-yard field goal at the 4:51 mark of the third quarter followed by another Max Mickey TD run of 13 yard-run with 30 seconds to play in the third quarter giving the Cougars a 30-0 advantage.
Wayne State avoided the shutout late in the fourth quarter when junior quarterback
Zach Osborn connected with sophomore
Shymere Williams on a 45-yard scoring pass with 2:46 left in the game to make the final score 30-7.
Sioux Falls outgained Wayne State in the contest 466-289. The Cougars produced 281 yards rushing and 185 passing while the Wildcats accounted for 167 on the ground and 122 passing.
Junior
Rashad Trimble gained a career-high 151 yards on 25 carries to lead the Wildcat rushing attack.
Throwing the ball, Osborn completed 10 of 26 passes for 122 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Sophomore tight end
Keaton Slaughter was the top receiver with three catches for 50 yards followed by
Willie Walton with three grabs for 14 yards.
Shymere Williams finished with two catches for 43 yards and one TD.
Linebacker
Kolbie Foster led the Wayne State defense with 10 tackles followed by senior defensive back
Cam Montgomery added nine stops in his final game in a Wayne State uniform.
Jamaal Conway-Smith added seven tackles and one interception while
Tyler Thomsen also produced seven tackles.
