Second half scoring surge gives Mary men win over WSC

            The University of Mary used an 11-0 run over a 3:30 stretch midway through the second half to take control of the game as the host Marauders defeated Wayne State College 85-78 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played Friday evening at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, North Dakota.  Mary is now 5-5 and 3-1 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 2-7 and 1-3 in league play.
            Wayne State stormed out of the gate quickly, taking an 8-0 lead in the first 1:40 of the contest. Mary rallied and took their first lead of the contest at 18-16 on a Bryan Jefferson 3-pointer with 11:15 remaining in the half. 
            The Marauders pushed the lead to four at 25-21 before WSC scored nine consecutive points to take a 30-25 lead following a Brian Goodwin 3-pointer with 6:23 to play in the first half. Mary rallied again and regained the lead before WSC finished with a 37-36 lead at intermission.
            Mary started the second half strong and took a 48-41 lead on a Ricky Skaggs dunk with 15:53 to play in the game. The 'Cats battled back and knotted the score at 48-48 on a Tony Bonner jumper with 13:29 to play.
            But that's as close as WSC would get to the Marauders.  The 'Cats trailed 56-54 following a JJ Zumbrennen 3-pointer with 10:33 to go, but the Marauders scored 11 straight points over the next 3:28 to take a 67-54 advantage.
            WSC never got closer than seven the rest of the way as the Marauders went on to record the 85-78 win.
            Wayne State was 28 of 59 shooting in the game for 47.5 percent including 8 for 24 behind the arc.  The Wildcats were 14 of 19 at the charity stripe.
            All five Wildcat starters reached double figures led by Kendall Jacks with 17 points.  Vance Janssen added 13 with Brian Goodwin and Jordan Cornelius scoring 11 each and Matt Thomas producing 10.
            Mary shot 57 percent from the field connecting on 28 of 49 shots.  The Marauders were 4 of 11 from the 3-point line and made 25 of 33 free throws.
            Bryan Jefferson led Mary in scoring with 19 points.  Pat Thomas (17), Rickey Suggs (16) and Damonta Henry (15) also hit double digits for the Marauders.
            Wayne State had one more rebound than Mary 27-26.  Goodwin led WSC on the glass with six followed by Bonner with five caroms while Suggs hauled in a game-high eight boards for Mary.
            Mary had one more turnover than WSC 15-14 but held a 16-9 edge in points off turnovers against the Wildcats.
            Goodwin led WSC with four assists and three steals in the contest.       
            Wayne State closes out their NSIC road trip Saturday evening with a 6 p.m. game at Minot State.
