Game 1-Newman 2 Wayne State 0Game 2-Newman 5 Wayne State 4           Newman University used strong pitching in the opener and a three-run third inning in the second game to sweep Wayne State 2-0 and 5-4 Sunday afternoon in Wichita, Kansas. With the sweep, the Jets improve to 5-2 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 0-4.Â
           In the opener, WSC was held to just three hits, and committed two fielding errors that led to the two unearned Jets runs in the game to fall 2-0.
           After a scoreless opening frame, Newman opened up the bottom of the second with a lead-off double by Mitchell Beaudreau. A sacrifice bunt advanced Beaudreau to third, before a fielding error allowed him to score giving the Jets the 1-0 lead.
           Newman was able to get another run across in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two out error to capture the 2-0 victory in game one.
           Newman held a 7-3 edge in hits in the opener.Â
Curtis Bussard and
Cody Jenkins were 1 for 2 at the plate for the Wildcats, while
Tanner Simons went 1 for 3 at the dish.
           Starting pitcher
Spencer Johnson, one of three Wildcat pitchers in the opener, suffered the pitching loss, working 4 innings allowing two runs (both unearned) on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
           The second game saw Newman complete the weekend sweep with a 5-4 win over the Wildcats.
           WSC took the early lead in the second after a
Chase Egelston single to left field scored
Albert Johnson. Newman was able to answer in the bottom of the frame after a fielding error allowed the tying run to score.
           The Wildcats were able to score a two out run in the top of the third after
Bodie Cooper reached base on a Newman fielding error, and eventually scored on an
Albert Johnson single to right field.
           Newman plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good at 4-2, and scored again in the fifth inning for the 5-2 advantage.
           The 'Cats had a rally brewing in the top of the sixth after a
Tanner Simons lead-off single, followed by a
Chase Egelston single, and a
Chris May walk to load the bases with nobody out, but were only able to score one in the inning. Nate Ackerman added a solo home run in the top of the seventh, but were unable to complete the comeback falling short 5-4.
           Newman held a 10-9 edge in hits in the game. Nate Ackerman and
Albert Johnson each went 2 for 5, with Ackerman recording his first homer of the season.Â
Tanner Simons finished 2 for 3 and
Chase Egelston went 2 for 4, each with a pair of singles, while
Cody Jenkins added a single as well.

Matthew Wood was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing five runs (two unearned) over 5 innings on seven hits, four strikeouts, and a walk.Â
Dalton Smith, Teagan Nissen, and
Spencer Morris all saw an inning of work in relief, each giving up a hit apiece.Â
           Wayne State is back on the road next weekend, visiting Oklahoma Panhandle State in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday, with both double-headers slated to start at noon in Goodwell, Oklahoma.
