Wayne State falls to #1 St. Cloud State in NSIC baseball opener

            #1 St. Cloud State used a complete game from Reese Gregory and eight shutout innings from Sheldon Miks to defeat Wayne State College 3-0 and 5-0 in the Northern Sun Conference baseball opener for both teams played Monday evening at Riverside Field in Yankton, South Dakota.  The games were moved from Wayne to Yankton due to snow and wet field conditions in Wayne. The Huskies improve to 17-0 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC while the Wildcats slip to 3-14 and 0-2 in league play.
    St. Cloud State starter Reese Gregory limited Wayne State to just five hits in the opener while striking out 10 Wildcat batters leading the Huskies to a 3-0 win.
    The Huskies scored two of their three runs in the top of the first on four hits and added another run in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead.
    WSC loaded the bases in the bottom of the third but could not score.  Curtis Bussard and Tanner Simons each singled while Brodie Cooper walked with two outs to load the bases, but Albert Johnson flied deep to left field to end the inning.
    The Wildcats had one more scoring chance in the fifth on Gregory as Simons and Cody Jenkins singled to put runners on first and second with two outs before Cooper struck out to the end the threat.
    Gregory then retired the final six batters to keep the score 3-0.
    SCSU had eight hits in the opener to five for the Wildcats.  Bussard and Simons each registered two singles in the contest while Jenkins had the other WSC single.
    Taner Ledezma (1-2) worked six solild innings but was tagged with the loss.  He was charged with three runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts.  Matthew Wood retired all three batters in the seventh with one strikeout.
    The second game saw sophomore lefthander Sheldon Miks hold WSC to just four hits in a complete game shutout as the Huskies completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory over the Wildcats.
    The game was scoreless until the fourth when the Huskies struck for two runs on two hits and one Wildcat error.  St. Cloud State added two more runs in the sixth with two hits while taking advantage of three walks for a 4-0 lead and added an insurance run in the eighth inning to close out the scoring for the 5-0 win.
    WSC had four hits in the game with Albert Johnson recording a double.  Fowler, Jenkins and Simons each recorded singles.
    Mitch Ragan (1-1) suffered the pitching loss for the Wildcats.  He allowed two runs on five hits over five innings of work with four strikeouts and two walks.  Teague McFadden worked the next 2/3 innings and was charged with two runs on two hits with three walks.  Connor Keating pitched the next 1 1/3 innings and retired all four batters with two strikeouts.
    Due to predicted rain on Tuesday, the remaining doubleheader between St. Cloud State and Wayne State has been cancelled.  The Wildcats are scheduled to host Minnesota Crookston in a Northern Sun Conference series on Saturday and Sunday starting at noon each day at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
