Wayne State 25 Minot State 13 Wayne State College belted seven home runs to highlight a 22-hit attack as the Wildcats outscored Minot State 25-13 in Northern Sun Conference baseball played in chilly Minot, North Dakota Sunday afternoon. The second game of Sunday's twinbill was cancelled due to cold temperatures and wind. WSC is now 7-18 and 4-5 in the NSIC while Minot State drops to 4-21 and 1-10 in league play.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the first and second to take a 4-0 lead, then produced eight runs in the fourth inning on six hits for a 12-0 lead.
Minot State scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to trim the Wildcat lead to 12-5.
WSC scored one run in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 17-5 lead.
The Beavers scored three in sixth, making the score 17-8. Wayne State erupted for another eight run inning in the seventh to give the Wildcats 25 runs in the contest while MISU closed out the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the seventh for a final count of 25-13.
Wayne State had 22 hits in the contest with 13 going for extra bases – seven homers and six doubles.
Seven of the nine Wildcat starters had at least two hits in the contest.
Centerfielder
Curtis Bussard was 4 for 5 with a homer, three doubles, five runs scored and three RBI.
Tanner Simons was 3 for 6 with three RBI and three runs scored while
Cody Jenkins finished 3 for 5 with a homer, double and three RBI.
Aaron Krier was 2 for 3 with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored.
Alex Kreft,
Bodie Cooper and
Albert Johnson also had two hits in the win.
Bussard, Jenkins, Cooper, Johnson, Nate Ackerman,
Nick McIntee and Krier each homered in the Wildcat win.
Starting pitcher
Matthew Wood (2-2) benefitted from the offensive support and picked up the pitching win, striking out eight in four innings of work. He was charged with five runs and seven hits.
Dalton Smith worked two innings of relief and was charged with three runs on four hits while Joe Greco pitched the final inning and was charged with five runs no three hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
Wayne State is scheduled to be at home Wednesday afternoon hosting Winona State in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
