WSC drops marathon twinbill to Minn. Crookston

Game 2 - Minnesota Crookston 17 Wayne State 13 (10 inn.)

            Late rallies fell short in both games as Minnesota Crookston outlasted Wayne State College 9-8 and 17-13 in 10 innings in a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader that last six hours and 45 minutes Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.  UMC is now 12-7 and 5-0 in league play while WSC falls to 3-16 and 0-4 in the NSIC.
            The first game saw Minnesota Crookston hold a 9-1 lead on WSC after four innings, but the 'Cats rallied for one run in the fifth and six in the sixth to make the score 9-8 before falling short in a 9-8 loss.
            The six-run sixth inning saw the Wildcats produce seven hits in the inning.  Alex Kreft had an RBI double while Taner Ledezma, Brandon Fowler, Cody Jenkins and Albert Johnson each had run-scoring singles.
            WSC had 17 hits in the loss compared to just 12 by UMC.  Fowler was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.  Curtis Bussard, Tanner Simons, Jenkins, Bodie Cooper and Albert Johnson each added two hits in the loss.
            Starter Matthew Wood (1-2) was tagged with the pitching loss, charged with six runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings pitched.  Spencer Morris, Mitch Savine and Joey Lenihan each worked in relief for the 'Cats.
            The second game saw WSC rally from a 12-4 deficit in the seventh, then score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 13-13 before the Golden Eagles responded with a four-run top of the 10th inning to outlast the Wildcats 17-13 in a 10 inning contest that took three hours and 45 minutes.
            Down 12-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, WSC scored seven runs to pull within one at 12-11 highlighted by a Bodie Cooper grand slam and a two-run triple from Chris May.
            UMC scored in the eighth to make the score 13-11, but WSC used two runs in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run scored on a passed ball that brought home Fowler to even the score at 13 apiece.  But UMC scored four runs on four hits and one WSC error in the top of the 10th to post the 17-13 win.
            UMC had 19 hits in the game with WSC recording 17.  Nate Ackerman homered twice and was 3 for 5 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the 'Cats offensively.  Bussard was 3 for 6 while Jenkins finished 3 for 6.  Cooper ended 2 for 6 with a grand slam and four RBI while Johnson and May each added two hits.
            Reliver Curtis Bussard (0-2) suffered the pitching loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched.
            The Wildcats and Golden Eagles meet again Sunday in a noon doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex to close out the four-game NSIC series.
