Wayne State College and the University of Sioux Falls split a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne as the Cougars won the opener 5-1 while Wayne State gained a split with a 12-5 win in the nightcap. WSC is now 9-24 overall and 6-12 in the NSIC while USF is 17-22-1 and 10-12-1 in league play.
The opener saw Sioux Falls starter Dylan Gavin hold the Wildcats to just one run on six hits over five innings of work as the Cougars recorded a 5-1 win.
WSC loaded the bases in the first inning, but a double play ended the early scoring threat.
USF took a 3-0 lead in the third with the Wildcats scoring their lone run of the game in the fifth inning as
Albert Johnson's single drove home
Aaron Krier (single).
The Cougars closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth for a 5-1 win.
WSC had seven hits in the contest. Krier was 3 for 4 with a double while
Alex Kreft and Nic McIntee also doubled. Johnson singled and had an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
Taner Ledezma (3-4) suffered the pitching loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and six walks.
Joey Lenihan and
Connor Keating also worked in relief for the 'Cats.
The second game saw WSC snap a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with seven runs to lift the Wildcats in a 12-5 victory.
The inning was highlighted by run scoring singles from
Cody Jenkins,
Nick McIntee and
Alex Kreft.
WSC added two more runs in the sixth for a 9-0 lead when Johnson (single) and
Bodie Cooper (walk) scored on a USF error.
Jenkins had an RBI single in the seventh while
Chris May delivered an RBI single in the eighth to close out Wayne State's scoring.
Wayne State's 14-hit attack was paced by Jenkins going 3 for 6 at the plate with two RBI. May finished 3 for 5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Kreft ended 2 for 5 while Johnson was 2 for 3 with three runs scored to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 17 games.
Teague McFadden (1-2) worked seven strong innings to earn the pitching win for the Wildcats, allowing just two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Dalton Smith pitched the eighth inning while Lenihan worked the ninth inning allowing one walk.
Wayne State is scheduled to be at home again this weekend hosting Southwest Minnesota State in a four-game NSIC series with doubleheaders on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.
