Wildcats earn hard-fought 1-1 tie against Winona State

            Sophomore forward Brooke Buzzell scored a goal with 4:23 left in regulation to give Wayne State a 1-1 double overtime tie against Winona State Friday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played at the WSC Soccer Pitch.  It was the first time in 25 career meetings dating back to 1999 that the Wildcats did not lose to Winona State in women's soccer.  WSC is now 4-1-2 and 1-1-2 in the NSIC while Winona State is 4-2-1 and 1-2-1 in league play.
            The first half was a scoreless battle between the two clubs with Winona State holding a 6-3 advantage in shots over the Wildcats during the first 45 minutes of play.
            Winona State scored early in the second half as Abby Bohanski booted a 10-yard shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Kylie Comba at the 51:44 mark with an assist from Courtney Wiencek to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
            The score stayed that way until the 85th minute when Wildcat reserve sophomore forward Brooke Buzzell scored her first goal of the season off a cross from the right side by Hannah Knight to even the score at 1-1 with 4:23 to play in regulation.
            In the first overtime, WSC had two shots with one on goal while both teams were credited with one shot in the second overtime period as the contest finished in a 1-1 tie.
            Thanks to an 11-4 shot advantage with the win in the second period, Wayne State finished the contest with a 17-11 edge in shots.  Both teams had six shots on goal.  The Wildcats held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks while WSC was called for 15 fouls compared to 10 on Winona State.
            Buzzell scored her first goal of the season on two shots to lead the Wildcat offense.  Senior Kelsey Engstrom finished with a team high four shots (three on goal).  Sophie Ketchmark, Suenly Galvez, Valerie Hernandez and Natalie Rech each added two shots for the Wildcats.
            Senior goalkeeper Kylie Comba was credited with five saves while allowing just one goal in 110 minutes of action.
            The Wildcats will be on the road Sunday playing a Northern Sun Conference contest at Upper Iowa starting at 1 p.m.
