Mestl's double-double carries #4 Wildcats in sweep at MSU Moorhead

            Senior outside hitter Michaela Mestl recorded her second straight double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs to go with three service aces to lead #4 Wayne State College in a 25-12, 25-23, 25-17 Northern Sun Conference volleyball sweep Friday evening at MSU Moorhead.  The Wildcats improve to 10-2 on the season and 2-2 in the NSIC while dropping the host Dragons to 6-6 and 1-3 in league play.
            MSU Moorhead jumped out of the gate in the first set for a 6-2 lead, forcing an early Wildcat timeout.  But WSC responded as freshman libero Haley Kauth served eight straight points that helped the Wildcats take an 11-6 lead and WSC then rolled to a 25-12 first set win over the Dragons.
            WSC trailed for much of the second set before rallying for a 25-23 set win.  The 'Cats trailed 16-10 and came back to tie the score at 19-19.  WSC then scored three straight points on a Megan Gebhardt kill, block by Alyssa Frauendorfer and Natalie Vondrak and service ace from Bree Ackermann to take a 22-19 lead. 
            After MSU Moorhead responded with three straight points to tie the score at 22, WSC used a Frauendorfer kill and forced two Dragon attack errors to win the second set 25-23.
            The Wildcats did not give the Dragons a chance to stay close in the third set as WSC took a 12-1 lead early in the third set and posted 20 kills in the set to complete the sweep with a 25-17 win over the Dragons.
            WSC hit .250 for the match with 49 kills on 128 attempts with 17 kills while MSUM posted a .070 attack percentage with 25 kills and 17 errors on 115 attacks.  WSC held a 64-55 edge in digs on the Dragons and 6-3 in service aces while both teams had seven blocks.
            Mestl led WSC with her sixth double-double of the season on 13 kills and 18 digs to go with three service aces.  Senior outside hitter Natalie Vondrak added 11 kills, eight digs and three blocks for the Wildcats.  Senior middle hitter Alyssa Frauendorfer led WSC in blocks with five. 
            Freshman libero Haley Kauth had 18 digs while sophomore setter Megan Gebhardt was credited with 37 set assists.
            The Wildcats will be on the road again Saturday night, visiting #11 Northern State in a 6 p.m. NSIC contest.
