Zach Osborn threw for two touchdowns and sprinted 45 yards on a bootleg with just 42 seconds left to play for the game-clinching touchdown to lead Wayne State College in a 23-22 Northern Sun Conference football victory Saturday afternoon over St. Cloud State at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne. WSC improves to 1-3 on the season while St. Cloud State falls to 1-3 on the year.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start, scoring on their opening two possessions of the game to take an early 10-0 lead on the Huskies.
WSC took the opening drive of the game and marched 62 yards on 13 plays before settling on a 30-yard
Ethan Knudson field goal for a 3-0 lead.
After forcing a SCSU punt, the Wildcats covered 80 yards on just six plays as Osborn hooked up with junior Nate Rogers on a 52 scoring pass down the left sideline to give Wayne State a 10-0 lead with 4:42 to play in the first quarter.
St. Cloud State got on the scoreboard with 54 seconds to play in the first quarter as running back Jaden Huff found the end zone on a two-yard scoring run trimming the WSC lead to 10-7.
Following an approximate 30 minute delay to start the second half due rain and lightning, St. Cloud State took the first possession of the third quarter and scored, driving 74 yards on eight plays with Husky quarterback Nate Meyer connecting with Jameson Parsons on a two-yard pass, giving the Huskies their first lead of the game at 14-10.
Wayne State regained the lead near the midway point of the fourth quarter as Osborn and Rogers teamed up on a 17-yard scoring play with 9:47 to play giving WSC a 16-14 lead after the PAT kick missed wide left.
The following drive saw SCSU move the ball to the WSC 36 before the drive stalled on downs with 3:50 to play.
The Wildcats were then running the ball to eat clock and preserve the win when on 3
rd and 2 from the SCSU 45, WSC quarterback
Zach Osborn rolled out left on a bootleg and scampered down the left side line 45 yards for a touchdown with just 42 seconds remaining, giving WSC a 23-14 lead.
SCSU did not give up as Meyer found tight end Sam Hartman sneak behind the Wildcat secondary as the two connected on a 61-yard scoring play with 20 seconds remaining to keep the Huskies in the game. A 2-point pass conversion from Meyer to John Pass made the score 23-22.
An onside kick attempt by SCSU was recovered by Wayne State's
Layne Sullivan at the SCSU 46 and WSC held on for the 23-22 win.
St. Cloud State held a slight 331-314 edge in total offense over Wayne State. The Huskies had 23 yards rushing and 308 passing while WSC had 150 on the ground and 164 through the air.
Junior
Rashad Trimble led WSC on the ground with 105 yards on 33 carries for his second 100-yard game of the season. Osborn completed 10 of 25 passes for 131 yards and two scores. Junior Nate Rogers hauled in three passes for 80 yards and two scores while
Shymere Williams added three catches for 41 yards.
Senior
Cam Montgomery led the WSC defense with six tackles followed by redshirt freshman linebacker
Tyler Thomsen with five tackles that included one tackle for loss for 13 yards.
DeWayne Scott and
Glenn Harris each had interceptions for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats will be on the road next Saturday visiting Concordia-St. Paul in the NSIC South Division opener for both teams with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota.
