Wayne State College and Minnesota Crookston played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played in Crookston, Minnesota. The Wildcats are now 3-6-5 and 2-5-4 in league play with the host Golden Eagles now 0-11-2 and 0-9-2 in NSIC games.
Minnesota Crookston got on the scoreboard first as Ellie Bretschneider scored on a header off a corner kick from Maggie Gibbons just 4:10 into the contest to put the host Golden Eagles in front early 1-0.
Wayne State countered with their own goal at the 25:35 mark as junior
Brooke Buzzell scored off a scramble in front of the net to even the score at 1-1.
The game then turned into a defensive contest as neither team registered a shot on goal in the second period sending the game into overtime tied at 1-1.
In the two overtime sessions, WSC held a 4-2 advantage in shots over the Golden Eagles with UMC notching the lone shot on goal as the contest ended in a 1-1 tie.
Wayne State finished the contest with a 16-7 advantage in shots and 4-2 in shots on goal. The Wildcats held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks on UMC while the Golden Eagles were called for 11 fouls to nine on the Wildcats.
Buzzell led WSC offensively with her third goal of the season and had two of Wayne State's four shots on goal with the other two belonging to
Christina Stasi.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Grisham was credited with one save while allowing one goal in the contest.
Wayne State returns home next weekend, hosting St. Cloud State Saturday and Minnesota Duluth Sunday with both contests starting at 1 p.m. at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
