Despite first goal of the season from
Alexis Strothers, Wayne State College dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Cloud State Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played at the WSC Soccer Pitch in Wayne. The Huskies are now 8-7-0 overall and 6-6-0 in the NSIC while the Wildcats fall to 3-7-5 and 2-6-4 in conference play.
St. Cloud State got on the scoreboard first as Hannah Marion received a cross from Kylie Cleary 14 minutes into the match to take the early 1-0 lead.
WSC earned a penalty kick at the 30:09 mark when
Hannah Knight was fouled in the box, but
Alexis Strothers could not connect on the PK.
Strothers got redemption two minutes later as she scored on a header off a corner kick from sophomore
Lauren Fleming to tie the game 1-1.
The Huskies found the back of the net again before halftime when Monica Majeski connected on a corner kick assisted by Brooke Bares to take the lead 2-1.
Both offenses stalled in the second half until the 79
th minute when SCSU scored from the left side of the box with the assist coming from Maria Kass to seal the game 3-1.
St. Cloud State finished the contest with a 16-10 edge in shots and 7-1 in shots on goal. The Huskies held a six to one advantage in corner kicks while WSC was called for nine fouls compared to seven on SCSU.
Strothers led the Wildcats offensively scoring her first goal of the season and adding three shots. Sophomore
Christina Stasi and freshman
Rylie Wehner each added two shots for the 'Cats.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Grisham was credited with four saves in the match.
Wayne State will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting Minnesota Duluth in a 1 p.m. NSIC contest.
