Rachel Fraser scored the lone goal of the game in the ninth minute on a wind-aided corner kick to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State Friday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played at the WSC Soccer Pitch. WSC is now 4-8-5 on the year and 3-7-4 in league play while the visiting Mustangs are now 1-15 and 1-13 in the NSIC.
The Wildcats took the wind in the first half and on a corner kick in the ninth minute Fraser lofted a ball that angled into the net over SMSU goalkeeper Jenna Meyer for a 1-0 Wayne State lead.
WSC then held off a late Mustang rally in the final five minutes as SMSU had two corner kicks that were knocked away by Wildcat goalkeeper
Rachel Grisham to preserve the 1-0 victory.
Wayne State finished the contest with a 18-8 advantage in shots and 9-2 in shots on goal over SMSU. WSC held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks while both teams were called for seven fouls.
Fraser scored her first goal of the season in the WSC win.
Rylie Wehner had five shots (three on goal) followed by
Christina Stasi with four shots (three on goal).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Grisham recorded her third shutout of the season with two saves in the win.
Wayne State will close out the season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. NSIC contest at Sioux Falls.
