#18 Augustana women control Wildcats

            #18 Augustana shot 19 of 27 (70.3%) in the second half to pull away for a 84-59 victory over Wayne State College in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played Tuesday evening at the Sioux Falls Arena.  The host Vikings stay unbeaten at 10-0 and 6-0 in the NSIC while WSC drops to 10-4 and 4-2 in league play.
            Neither team shot the ball well in the first quarter, but Augustana forced eight Wayne State turnovers and built a 16-8 lead.  WSC made just 4 of 14 shots from the field (28.6%) while the Vikings were 6 for 18 (33.3%).
            The Wildcats got as close as six in the second quarter at 18-12 following an Erin Norling layup at the 6:13 mark. 
            WSC still trailed 22-14 with 4:31 to play in the half, but Augustana put the game out of reach with a 16-4 run to take a 36-18 lead before finishing the half with a 38-23 lead.
            The host Vikings never allowed WSC a chance to get back into the game as Augustana made 10 of 14 shots in the third quarter to take a commanding 60-42 lead.
            Augustana pushed the lead to 26 at 76-50 midway through the fourth quarter and finished with the 84-59 win.
            Kacie O'Connor and Erin Norling paced Wayne State in scoring with 11 points apiece while freshman reserve Payton Draper added 10 points. 
            Wayne State made just 21 of 59 shots from the field for 35.6 percent, the second-worst shooting game of the season for the Wildcats.  WSC was 4 of 16 behind the arc and 13 for 17 at the charity stripe.
            Logan O'Farrell recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds for Augustana.  Paige Peterson (12) and Shelby Selland (10) also hit double figures for the Vikings.
            Augustana shot 50.8 percent for the game making 31 of 61 shots, including a sizzling 70.3 percent (19-27) in the second half.  The Vikings were 6 of 18 from 3-point range and a perfect 16 of 16 at the free throw line.
            WSC held a slim 35-34 edge in rebounding over the Vikings with Maggie Schulte grabbing seven boards for the Wildcats. 
            Augustana forced 20 turnovers on WSC to just 11 on the Vikings, resulting in a 23-12 advantage in points off turnovers. 
            The Wildcats resume play on Saturday, December 30th with a 2 p.m. NSIC contest at Sioux Falls.
