WSC splits with Winona State

            Wayne State used a seven-run fifth inning to win the opener 11-4, but was held to just three hits in the second game for a 5-0 loss to split a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader played Wednesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.  WSC is now 11-15 and 6-8 in the NSIC while Winona State drops to 6-20 and 6-10 in league play.
            The Wildcats pounded out 15 hits in the opener, highlighted by a seven-run fifth inning, as WSC posted an 11-4 win over the Warriors. 
            After Winona State scored three in the first on five hits for an early 3-0 lead, WSC came back with one run in the second and three in the third for a 4-3 lead.  Peyton Barnes had an RBI single to score Kyle Thompson with the first WSC run.  Bodie Cooper produced an RBI single in the third followed by a two-run single from Aaron Krier to put the 'Cats in front 4-3.
            WSC put the game out of reach in the fifth scoring seven runs on seven hits.  Cooper had one of the big hits in the inning with a three-run triple while Jackson Petersen had a two-run single with Krier adding an RBI single.
            Wayne State had 15 hits in the win, led by Krier going 3 for 4 with three RBI.  Cooper ended 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBI with Petersen going 2 for 4 with two RBI. 
            Starter Taner Ledezma (2-2) pitched five solid innings to get the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with one strikeout.  Keenan Breen and Spencer Johnson each worked one inning of relief.
            The second game saw Winona State hold the Wildcats to just three hits as the Warriors gained a split of the doubleheader with a 5-0 win.
            WSU scored single runs in the third, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
            Wayne State hits were singles by David Janes (second inning), Jackson Petersen (third inning) and Bodie Cooper (sixth inning).
            Junior starter Tegan Nissen (0-1) suffered the pitching loss, charged with two runs on three hits over six innings of work.  Junior reliever Kyle Kenneback gave up two runs (one earned) in two innings on three hits with three strikeouts while Joey Lenihan worked the final inning and was charged with one run on one walk.
            Wayne State will visit Minnesota Duluth this weekend and the series has been moved up one day due to the weather.  Games are now scheduled for 10:30 a.m./12:30 p.m. at Wade Stadium in Duluth with Saturday's doubleheader starting at noon to be played on the Minnesota Duluth campus at Bulldog Park.
