Maggie Schulte Day 6 blog from USA D-2 Women's Basketball Tour in Brazil

8/6/2017 5:02:00 PM

The following is a blog from Wayne State senior women's basketball player Maggie Schulte on Day 6 (Saturday, August 5th) on her experience with USA D-2 Women's Basketball Tour in Brazil.

Today, we had an early game at 9, and played a University team. University teams are rare in the area because the most common teams are club and professional teams. This was an extremely humbling experience and made me appreciate everything we have back in the states.
When we first walked into the gym, there were puddles on the floor from the rain the night before. The ceiling continued to leak throughout the game, so someone had to keep an eye on it and wipe it up every chance they got.
The team we played had some really great players! After the game, the women's team came and sat by us and played us some of their music and taught us more of the Portuguese language. Meeting the players is one of my favorite parts of the trip because they're always so excited to meet us and trade shirts, shorts, or jerseys.
Once we left the game, we got to stop by the most famous soccer complex in the world; Maracana Stadium, the sight of opening & closing ceremonies for 2016 Olympics + Soccer World Cup Finals 2014. The rest of the day was ours to spend on the beach and do some shopping.
Today really opened my eyes to see that Brazil is not just the beautiful beach and amazing hotels. We are so fortunate to have the facilities and support we have back in the US. Go USA!!
