Game 2 - Minnesota Duluth 6 Wayne State 2
Sophomore starter Hunter Wienhoff fired a one-hit shutout and faced the minimum 21 batters in the opener to lead the Wildcats in a 4-0 NSIC baseball victory over Minnesota Duluth Friday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. UMD came back in the nightcap to earn a 6-2 win to split the doubleheader and four-game series with Wayne State. The Bulldogs are now 6-10 and 2-2 on the year with WSC at 8-10 and 6-2 in the NSIC.
The story of the first game was the pitching of Wienhoff, a sophomore righthander from Quincy, Illinois. Wienhoff allowed a second inning single to UMD's Drew Stewart, but WSC turned a double play to end the inning.
UMD's Chase Thomas opened the fourth with a walk, but was erased on another Wildcat double play.
Offensively, WSC scored all four runs in the third inning on four hits and two Bulldog errors. The key hit was a bases-loaded clearing double from
Bryce Bisenius. Bisenius then scored when Travis Milelr singled to left field and advanced home on a fielding error by the Bulldogs.
Wayne State had five hits in the game. Bisenius had the bases loaded double and three RBI while
Tanner Simons ended 2 for 3 with a double and run scored. Miller and
Zane Zitek each added singles.
Wienhoff improved to 2-2 on the year with the complete game, one-hit shutout. He fanned seven batters and walked one while allowing just one hit and facing the minimum 21 batters.
The second game saw Minnesota Duluth salvage a split in the series with a 6-2 win over the Wildcats.
UMD scored single runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead and added three more runs in the sixth to chase Wildcat starter Charles Hasty for a 5-0 lead.
WSC scored both of its runs in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Hanson led off the inning with a solo homer with Travis Miller singling and later scoring on a wild pitch for the second run.
Minnesota Duluth added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make the final score 6-2.
UMD had nine hits in the win to eight for WSC. Hanson finished 3 for 4 with a solo homer.
Kyle Thompson was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles while Simons, Miller and Peyton Barnes each singled.
Hasty (1-2) suffered the pitching loss, allowing seven runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings with one walk and one strikeout. Isaac Rubendall worked 1 2/3 innings of relief and was charged with one run on two hits. Sophomore Lawson Zenner pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Wayne State resumes play on Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31, with a NSIC road trip to Minot State.
