Wayne State and Sioux Falls played an NSIC baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon and early evening that lasted 7 hours and 23 minutes with the Wildcats winning the opener 14-10 followed by a Sioux Falls victory of 21-13 in the second game that last 3 hours and 56 minutes. WSC is now 18-22 overall and 16-14 in the NSIC while USF is 14-28 and 14-18 in league games.
Wayne State ended up on the right side of a slugfest in game one of the twinbill against Sioux Falls. The Wildcats scored 14 runs on 13 hits to take the first game of the day 14-10.
Sioux Falls got on the board first, scoring the first run of the day on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Sophomore third baseman Payton Barnes led off the bottom of the first for WSC with a walk. Designated hitter
Bryce Bisenius singled to right field and Barnes was able to score on a fielding error by the right fielder. Andrew Hanson later had an infield single to the shortstop to score Bisenius and give WSC the 2-1 edge over USF after one inning.
Both teams scored four runs in the second inning on three hits, making the score 6-5.
Sioux Falls was able to score two runs in third and fourth innings and hold the Wildcats scoreless to take the lead back 9-6 after four innings.
Wayne State then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead for good. Hansen led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman. Freshman Alex Logelin doubled to right center to plate Hanson and tie the game. Shortstop Jake Lorenzini then singled through the left side to put runners on the corners. Senior Rob Ramsey pinch hit and crushed a three-run home run to left field to put the 'Cats back out in front 9-6. WSC scored two more runs in the innings thanks to a two-RBI double by Bisenius.
USF got a run back in the sixth on a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
WSC tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Alex Logelin homered to left field to start the inning. Sophomore Jake Lemar singled to left field and scored on an RBI triple by Jackson Peterson.
The Cougars made things interesting in the seventh. USF used two hits and a hit by pitch to load the bases before sophomore closer Lawson Zenner struck out first baseman Josh Rehwaldt to end the game.
Wayne State had 13 hits in the contest.
Bryce Bisenius led WSC at the plate, going 3 for 4 with thee RBIs and two runs scored. Alex Logelin went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Jackson Petersen collected two hits with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior Rob Ramsey made the most of his one plate appearance, belting a three-run home run to left field.
Senior reliever
Brady Johnson earned the win for the 'Cats, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing only one earned run on two hits and struck out two batters. Starter Aidan Breedlove pitching three inning, giving up six earned runs on five hits and striking out three. Closer Lawson Zenner earned the save after throwing the final inning and a third and striking out three of the seven batters he faced.
The second game saw Sioux Falls score at least one run in every inning as the Cougars belted out 19 hits while using 16 walks and four Wildcat errors to score 21 runs in a 21-13 win.
Wayne State scored at least one run in all but the fifth inning, but only had single run innings in four of the nine innings in falling to the Cougars.

Tanner Simons was 4 for 5 with a pair of homers, a triple, four RBI and four runs scored to lead the Wildcats at the plate. Andrew Hanson was 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored followed by Travis Miller,
Bryce Bisenius and Jake Lorenzini each going 2 for 5 at the plate.
Starter Charles Hasty, one of nine Wildcat pitchers used in the game, suffered the pitching loss and is now 1-4 on the season.
Wayne State will close out the regular season next weekend at #7 Augustana with doubleheaders set for Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at noon in Sioux Falls.
