Wayne, Neb. --- In a historically lopsided series, the Wildcats turned the table with goals from
Megan Phillips and
Christina Stasi to give Wayne State a 2-0 victory over Minnesota Duluth in NSIC action on Sunday afternoon. Wayne State moves to 2-6-1 on the season, with a conference record of 2-4-1. The Bulldogs fall to 3-6-1 while dropping to a 2-4-1 NSIC mark. The win gave the Wildcats their first victory over Minnesota Duluth, previously 0-15-2.
          Â
Alyssa Bagley got an early test in the match, recording a save in the first eight minutes of action. Only four minutes later, the Wildcats were on the scoreboard. After a Bulldog foul,
Samantha Phillips stepped up to take the free kick. She found her teammate, and sister,
Megan Phillips who did well to turn the ball into the back post from an awkward angle to put the Wildcats ahead. The goal marked Phillips first of the season, while Phillips recorded her first assist on the year.
The rest of the first half saw the Wildcat defense stretched and tested by the Bulldogs, recording a 7-1 advantage in shots. Bagley and company held their own, including a stretched out save with 30 seconds left in the half and jumping on the loose rebound to keep Minnesota Duluth off the scoreboard.
Bagley matched her two first half saves in the first five minutes of the second half, and a third by the 55
th minute. It was Stasi however, that stole the show only a minute later. Picking up a loose ball, Stasi weaved through two defenders before launching a curling effort from 25 yards out that went into the upper right corner and left the Bulldog keeper with no chance as Wayne State doubled their advantage. Stasi entered the score sheet for the first time this season.
The Wildcats spent most of the second half after the goal defending their lead from a flurry of Bulldog shots. Minnesota Duluth's 10 shots in the second half were matched with six Bagley saves as the Wildcats recorded their third shutout of the year.
          Â
Alyssa Bagley ended the day with a career-high eight saves. Phillips, Stasi, and
Carleigh Wilson ended the match with a shot on goal each. Minnesota Duluth held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, while holding a 17-5 edge in shots.
Wayne State will be on the road next weekend, visiting Upper Iowa Friday at 3 p.m. and Winona State Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.Â
